Stardust

I went to see Stardust on Sunday night. Having seen the trailers, I thought it looked a little pants, but the cast looked ace, so I was quite intrigued and said yes when the missus asked if we could go.

The story is based on a Neil Gaiman book (which I didn't previously realise or I would've been sold much quicker) and is mostly set in a fantasy world that is accessed from somewhere in England. The basic premise is that a guy is trying to impress the person he thinks he loves, and sets himself a quest to bring back a falling star for her. Sounds like pap already, but somehow it isn't.

The impressive cast make this film very watchable, especially Robert de Niro, and Ricky Gervais has a small part in it too, basically playing himself (as ever). Neil Gaiman was one of the producers I think, and films where the author of the original book is involved in the adaptation always tend to come out well I think. In short, I really enjoyed the film, and it's a great one to see if you want some easy brownie points with the missus.

That's good to hear, I'm a bit of a sucker for fantasy films.

The book was pretty good, so I'd be interested to see how comes across on the big screen.

Even if it has got that utter cupcake Gervais in it.

:above: QFT. The man is just plain unfunny and to top off it he's a smug twat, I couldn't stand to watch the office because of it.

I'm with the ginger on this, Gervais isn't that good.

Extras was good at times, but I'm not really a fan of cringe-humour excluding Curb Your Enthusiasm etc.

I couldn't watch The Office because I found it about as funny as watching Chubby Brown stamping on kittens. I hate Ricky Jervais for being a smug twat, which is entirely different.

I really liked the Office, so there. Anyway, he is in this film for about 3 minutes, so hating Gervais is not a reason to miss it.

Is he in it for 3 minutes because he dies horribly? I'd pay to see that.

Also, you appear to be LeChuck.

Hmmm.

I liked the office, although I wouldn't watch it again. Everything I've seen (or heard) Gervais in since has convinced me that

a) he's a one trick pony and,
b) his RL personality is far too close to that of D Brent for comfort

In a first for the industry, I am told that teh US version of the office is superb. I suppose our western cousins invented corpoate masterbation so it should be good, I suppose. I've only seen part of one episode though so can't comment.

I'm always interested by stuff from Neil Gaiman. I'll definitely give this a go, hopefully it's not hopelessly hashed up like Neverwhere was.

It did take time for me to come to terms with quite how much of the detail (rather than the plot arcs) in Gaiman's books are nicked (not borrowed, but shamelessly ripped off) from ancient folklore but then that's what it's there for I suppose.

I sent him an email once asking him what that Fenwick green character or whatever (the one who's actually a place and a person and a place, sort of in the Sandman stuff) thought of being cast in the (frankly shite) Land of teh Dead movie. I got no answer. That's because Gaimen couldn't have done a damn thing about it because it wasn't his character at all but a mythical land of folklore tales of sailors, although I give him credit for rendering a village as a fat middle aged bloke.

can you tell I'm bored?

If American Gods were a woman, I would bear its children.
