I think the original sounded better with a Gravis Ultrasound.
I only listened to E1M1, and was impressed by inventiveness of the additional guitar solo bit near the end, but the rest sounded like they'd dumped the MID into Reason, picked some default sounds and twiddled the phaser about half-way through.
Still, it's far better than anything I could create, there are some good source tracks and good memories there - I'll listen to the rest sometime.

I knew someone who had a Gravis Ultrasound... They were fucking enormous and needed to be slid into the guide rail that sat near the PC Speaker.

Indeed - they were known as "full length slots" meaning the card spanned the entire insides of a (full size) PC.
Sounded great though, I think (musically) soundcards took a massive backward step after that, and are only just catching up.

that card rocked!!! i had one, but i think it got chucked out way way longtimes afar ago
or possibly it became one of the supporting structures of our house extension im not sure
