Shell Station Customers 'Pay by Touch'
I’m not saying anything bad about Shell using biometrics at the pump…all I’m saying is that the first time someone shows up with a finger that doesn’t belong to them, there’s gonna be a problem.

Customers will be able to initially scan their fingerprints at a kiosk inside the gas station and can link payment information either at the store or online. The biometric devices, made by a San Francisco-based company called Pay By Touch, are one part of a technological trifecta Shell is rolling out at its gas stations.

*sigh* I was so wanting that to be a story about paying in kind for your fuel

With fuel prices in this country you'd be expecting to be sucking on the nozzle for quite a while anyway.

It's not so much the blithe ignorance of the people who think this is so secure that bothers me, it's the fact that almost everyone else immediately thinks "what if you chop someone's fingers off".

Weird, I was having idle thoughts about chopping people fingers off and it was nothing to do with the article....

I prefer chip & pin to chop & fin(ger). Also it's easier to lend your missus your card.

Indeed. I'm lead to believe that it's far easier duplicate someone's finger print than it is to cut off someone's finger.

problem is, to duplicate a fingerprint, you either need access to the person (so you can get the print), or their finger

This would be true whichever method you use and if you're ruthless you may see cutting someone's finger off as the easy option I suppose.

Although is there a method to lift prints in the same way that the police forensics do?

Might work if they added heat sensors, or something to scan for a pulse

Usually they work on heat and conductivity. ie. if you're not sweating, you're dead.

or, you lick the finger/gummi bear and hold it in your armpit for 30 seconds.

Eh, there's always a silly and amusing way around these systems

1- Spray the scanner with hairspray, allow a few seconds to dry...

2- place ohp sheet or clingfilm onto scanner, press gently...

3- other fingerprint is read, you get very expensive flammable liquid via someone elses bank account...

4- ...

5- Profit!
