from the steam news site:
If you have purchased a copy of Half-Life 2, we are sorry you are still waiting to play. This is not Valve's choice. Vivendi is insisting that the game has not yet been released, and has threatened that Valve would be in violation of its contract if we activate the Half-Life 2 Steam authentication servers at this time.
GAHHH!

It's out tuesday, which is hardly that long to wait really. It's neither Valve's nor Vivendi's fault that some stores in the US decided to break the street date and sell it to people before it was meant to be released.

true, its neither of their faults that the game was released early by some stores, and 2 days isnt long to wait.
However, i do get the impression from the vareity of news sites and suchlike that if it were purely valves decision, the game would have been out by now. And it isnt, and thats Vivendi's decision. Therefore, i am annoyed with vivendi.
I would probably still be annoyed with them if it were a two hour wait. I could be playing the game now, damnit.

Games are leaked on purpose to get chatrooms everywhere getting hyped up about the game, and wanting it as soon as it comes out.
They know that people who buy/download pirated games will do so regardless, so what better way to get free promotion of your product, than to release it to the world, and let people speculate who did it.
See they've even got us talking about it
