right well, ive just bought a Philips SPA2600 and all seems to working fine apart from the centre speaker.

It's not broken because it works in other jacks on the subwoofer so i suspect its something to do with the sound card or driver. I've got Realtek HD Audio Manager thingy and when I plug the subwoofer and centre jack into the pc it only comes up with subwoofer/centre and not subwoofer and centre which I think means it's one or the other.

Just wondered if anyone knew how to fix it?

Is it set to the correct speakers?

Also is it the newest sound card/chip driver version?

subwoofer/center will mean subwoofer and center. They usually are on the same jack plug for 5.1 systems.

It is more likely that the media you are playing does not have a centre channel.
Can you use the realtec things to pipe a test sound down each channel? what happens then?

yer if i do an individual test of each speaker, the centre sound just comes out of the subwoofer.

and yer buzzmong, the sound card driver is the latest.

do you have any software to go with the card? If so check you don't have it set to use 4.1

only Realtek HD Audio Manager which is set to 6 speaker setup (5 speakers and a subwoofer) and sound in control panel is set to 5.1 speaker setup

I take it the 'sounds and audio devices' thingybobby in the contol panel is set up for 5.1 as well, that can override proprietary software.

unlikely.

Have you got all the realtek crap installed?

often it'll allow you to specifically assign jacks to functions, which might help.

yes yes ive got them all assigned to doing what they should be doing.

I've just unplugged them all and put them in in a different jacks and now it seems that the right front speaker isnt working but the centre one is (the reverse of what was happening before). The sound that should come through the right speaker is just coming through the subwoofer?! :x (aswell as whats meant to come through the subwoofer)

That sounds fucked up! Ahahahaha sorry. Is there any other speakers lying around/that a mate has, so you can try the same thing with them? eliminating or reproducing the problem with them could get us closer to figuring what's having a flid.

standard speakers or ones from a 5.1 system?

5.1's that setup in the same way would be best, well it'd be the only way really. The results of another set of 5.1's with the same jacks would then give clues to whether it's card/software/speakers.

couldn't i just stick in a pair of normal speakers in the jack where the front left and right speakers were and tell the computer that they are front left and right speakers?

You could, Probably.

:above:. But that introduces another variable into the problem, and we want to minimise these to gain a greater chance of finding where the problem lies. You don't HAVE to do any of this, but it would help us help you.

I had this exact same thing happen when I first plugged it all in. There's nothing wrong with either soundcard or speakers.

Iirc (and I can't verify this till I get home) you don't want the Realtek sound control set up as 6 speakers. There should be an option for 5.1 or failing that I think even 4 worked. I seem to remember it being rather counter intuitive, but once you get it so the little picture shows a single centre speaker that you can click on to test the speaker, everything should be funky.

Proper Solution: Realtek is crap. Get a Soundblaster.

I'll give/lend you my external Soundblaster, it's semi-decent-ish.
