Run, Fatboy Run

Last night I went to see the new Simon Pegg film, Run, Fat boy, Run.

For those of you who haven't heard of it the film is written by Pegg and Michael Ian Black. It stars Pegg, Black Books Dylan Moran, Thandie Newton and Simpsons legend Hank Azaria, and is directed by David Schwimmer of Friends fame.

The basic premise of the film sees Pegg character Dennis leave his pregnant fiance Libby (Newton) at the altar. Five years later he is still in love with her and wants her back, but she is now seeing an american named Wit, played in an unusually straight role by Hank Azaria.

Wit is a fit and active man and is planning in running in the upcoming Nike river run, and Dennis decides that he will get into shape and run too, hoping that it will help him win back Libby.

The rest of the movie details Dennis' training, coached by Moran's character and his landlord, and culminates with the day of the race.

Run, Fatboy Run is an ineresting edparture for Pegg, while it still features some slapstic humour and jokes that could well have been pulled straight from Spaced or Moran's Black Books, it feels much more like a traditional romantic comedy than eitehr of his 2 previous films.

It's also good to see Pegg acting opposite a crowd somewhat different from his usual 'crew', whilst I like him with the likes of Nick Frost et al. I know he's worked with Moran before, both on Black Books and Shaun of the Dead, but it isn't a pairing we see often, and I think it works well here.

On the whole I think this is a good romantic comedy, though I am probably biased by being a massive fan of Simon Pegg. This film definitely appeals more to a general audience than Shaun or Hot Fuzz did (although both thosefilms seemed to reach a decent audience).

I do feel they could have used Hank Azarias comic talents to a greater degree, but i think this would have probably detracted from the unlikeableness of his character.

Good review.

I thought it looked like one of them bloody rom coms, I'll be sweeping it for watching with the missus, nothing moar.

The rom part is what fucks 'knocked up' about, in between the many lols is far too much character development and seriousness, booooooooring.

I got it for my birthday and watched it a few weeks ago. Very funny, but it made me feel bad because it's yet another advocate of the "if you don't go running every day you're a fat lazy worthless fuck" school of thought.
