An Update

So,I'm on the last day of week 7 here at ATR Pirbright. By all rights (Well, not really, but it's a good saying ain't it) I should be at home getting more drunk, but sadly I failed my drill test recently (twice

) which ment I got shiped off to the local idiot squadron for extra training so I can pass it, so, no long weekend. To this point, it's been a hell of a ride. Parts have been easy (Adapting to field ops

), others very challanging (Drill, straight

) and I have at times been very tempted to drop out completly (Last friday, tuesday before that), but I'm still here. Hopefully, with a little luck, I'll pass a drill test re-test in 10 days, and get back to troop, at which point I'm 4 days from a long weekend. If the worst happens, in 3 weeks I'll be discharged from training, but I felt like I needed to post something here saying how I'm getting on, given how much encouragement you all gave me while I was traveling down this road.

Nice to know you're not dead.
What does the drill test actually involve? Having a natural dislike of running around in the rain, I've no knowledge of military whatsits at all.

Its the whole formation quick/slow marching, standing to attention and moving a gun from the floor to your shoulder and across your chest thing. If you start young at otc or afc it becomes second nature, but one thing thats a bitch is tick tocking, where you move the same arm and leg at the same time, it works if you dont think about it, but its almost impossible not to. I went a long way to becoming an army officer, to the point in fact where I had to give my 1st bursary back and cancel a trip to germany to stay with the para's. Now I'm fat, lazy and just like guns a lot.
I was sure that the drill wing was moving to catterick from pirbright earlier this year, guess not.

Can't you just paint your nose and fling your poo at them?
Or is that the mandrill test I'm thinking of...

Glad you're still popping in mate! Knowing nothing about military training, I'd say you owe it to yourself to get through the initial training at the very least, and then make up your mind after that. I'm sure that once you're through this bit and on the the more specialised training in whatever you've chosen to do it'll become a whole lot more enjoyable.

Good to hear you're sticking it out. Good luck on the re-test!

Don't worry, most folks fuck up in drill, I never did I was ace me.
I mean you'll get it in the end (sometimes with a broom handle, all part of the fun).
But Don't worry the real Army is miles apart from Basic Training and a lot more fun. Stick at it and you'll be glad you did.

My mate likes to call this bit 'the freebie', that in fact stands for 3B or bbb as in bullshit baffles brains, your taught shit for the sake of it, like marching. Like mikkyo said, training is to get you brainwashed to stab straw bags with bayonets and not flinch when a big bastard is screaming/spitting on you. Nothing like normal army life...
