i was happly using my computer and i rebooted to linux, all was happy

tried to boot back to windows, it just gives me a black screen :(

teh data on the HDD seems ok, so i suspect the MBR

(i've checked my grub config and boot.ini)

any help greatly appreciated, i really don't want to have to reinstall and/or backup 100gig of data

if the mbr is knackered, the windows install cd will allow you to restore a default windows booting mbr

once you're there, you can then boot into linux with a live cd and attempt to repair grub manually (i can't advise on how to do that, as it's something I've never had to do)

if you boot the windows cd, then jump to the recovery console, log into your windows install and type:

Code: Select all

fixmbr
that should restore the boot record to as it was when you first installed windows.

Then you can attempt to get your system dual booting again in however way suits you best.

I make no guarantee that this'll work for you, but you can be reasonably assured that it will prevent grub from loading.

grub was onb my linux HDD so i was able to get to linux

but then the recovery console "fixed" linux's mbr, oops

so i'm now in a nice clean install of ubuntu

fixmbr and fixboot both failed to fix my problems, looks like a backup and reinstall job

it's still not fixed, i really need a DVDR, or new HDD now, as backing up ~100gig onto CDs is not a prospect i relish

My Hard Disk drive doesn't seem to be powering on, what do you think could be wrong with it?

sweet!. I remember seeing something similar a few years ago. The guy called himself "The Hardware Asasssin" and took a variety of handguns, rifles, and shotguns to an old PC and a printer. Very nice.

I had to backtrack on it because it looked a little odd to be a 12 gauge, and according to the guy, it was a .22 :P

 Hmmm I suspect that the hole in the foil security sticker would certainly invalidate the warranty.
