actualy ive always wanted to get linux on the go, its just the fact that there are alot of things its not compatable with, and i wouldnt have a clue what i was doing for a while. prolly more effort than its worth

I managed to install Fedora t'other day. Got it nicely dual-booting with XP too. I am most proud. Now I just need to figure out what I can use it for.

Linux rocks for doing uh, stuff.

i'd love to run linux but a lot of games don't run on it and i'm sure that i couldn't use messenger and all the other stuff i waste my time with.

mostly these days, the only thing linux is crap at is games (mainly due to crap drivers and no direct x support, most openGL games run fine)

otherwise, it's at least as capable as windows and there's shedloads of IM apps and suchlike

hmm in that case when i upgrade this git, i'll stick my older stuff into another case and make a linux rig

linux makes for a kickass workhorse OS, there's an open source commandline tool for practically anything these days. If you're willing to put in the effort, learn a little *sh, read a few manpages and hammer it about a bit, you'll find a use for it.

I would have installed Linux a while ago if it weren't for the gaming issue. I'd love to dump Windoze, but these days I use my computer mainly as a gaming machine, so loading Linux would just be wasting hard drive space.

Ah Ive got it to dual boot Linux or Win XP Pro, best of both worlds.
Now all I have to do is figure out how to use Linux properly

I've thought about switching to linux but games are the main thing stopping me. I found something called cedega which lets you run windows games under linux: http://www.transgaming.com/ has anyone tried it? how well did games run compared to windows?

I tried it, but at the time most distributions were switching over to X.Org and ATI still only had drivers for the depreciated XFree86. I got Warcraft 3 running fine under it though.

But be warned, installing the graphics card drivers can be a ball ache:
1) they're not open source
2) they usually need configuring by hand
3) they are seperate from the distribution and may break stuff
4) they're not as immediately configurable

But also:
1) they're fucking fast (and I mean jaw droppingly so - Linux UT2004 will run a good 30-40 fps faster over Windows UT2004 on a Sempron 2600+ w/9600XT)
2) they're rock solid
3) they make you look uber geeky

Also, if you don't have a popular sound card (like a sound blaster, nforce audio etc) or your card chip is extremely modern, you may not find any support for it in the linux kernel - and soundcard manufacturers are very reluctant to support linux.[/u]

Wow looks like I jumped into the deep end then. Oh well nothing ventured nothing gained.

I tried to throw Fedora on my IBM Thinkpad 600e but the sound didn't work and I didn't have time to fuck about with it (I was using it to play music for my 4th of July bash) and so I just threw XP on it instead.

For that uber geeky look, you have to understand Unix.

However this involves wearing jesus sandals with socks, and having a long beard to stroke whilst remembering stupidly long command lines.
