that would actualy be quite handy for me, do you mean just changing a heatsink or the hole kettle of fish? i went n bought a big heatsink that will fit my socket just not my mobo, so im going to have to transfer the lot i think. cough do socket 462 cough. i might just swap my athlon xp for a 64 actualy. think that would definately need a new psu mind, ive gotten through 3 on this pc already

I haven't built my own PC is about 30,000 years.* What should I know about hardware today (PCI-E, PCI-X, etc)?

PCI-E is PCI Express - a good thing. - this is the one that new graphics cards and stuff use.

PCI-X is like normal PCI, but longer, more bandwidth, mostly found in server motherboards. no real use for most home users.

erm, heatsinks and fans area a whole other beast. since I don't have the budget or time to check out CPU coolers, I'll have to refer you to the many tech sites on the net. A basic guideline is copper+big fan = good cooling.


So I need to make a guide on PCI/PCI-E/PCI-X and Hard Drives. I will start on those as soon as I get my socket one posted.

I'm working on the PCI/PCI Express guide now. After that I'll move on to hard drives and then I'll probably start the upgrading guide.
