As we said we'd do WIP shots, here's number one:

Primed! (Badly)

Washed with Biel-tan green and layered with Warboss green.



Sorry I forgot to get a pic after I washed them and I really need to borrow a decent camera, the one on my phone is pretty shit.

I might have to scrub and restart. Far too dark first coat, despite being fairly thin, has proven a bitch to lighten up, new top level coat may be covering too much detail. I'll do a WIP pic tomorrow when the current paint is dry to see what they're like and once it has settled, but it hasn't gone quite to plan.

Protip I'd forgotten: Mixing paints and painting in the evening is fine, just make sure you use extra light to gauge the colour correctly.

Edit: FFS. After they've dried a bit, it's actually given me the mottled flesh effect I was after. Just too many layers.

I've put the base coats on but that's about it. Running with a red white and blue theme - one red, one white and one blue gobbo. I'll get picks and update at the weekend.

1) Paint definitely needs to come off, detail is buggered.

2) There's no macro mode on my Nexus 4. I'm quite suprised, and it sadly means bad pictures all round.

Well I'm pretty much done, only one more colour to highlight and basing left to be done. I won't post pictures until everyone else is finished.

I've been doing a bit every night this week. It gets faster the less area I cover, but with base coating there's a lot of waiting to dry.

Couple more updates from the last few nights. I've been getting through it pretty quickly now I'm on smaller areas.

Shading:



That brown is far too dark. It's got me before. I think I might water it down in future, or drop a bit of yellow ink in. Yellow ink has to have some use (although I haven't found it yet).

Highlighting:



I dug out my old Konica for the macro function. Which is great, but it's actually clearer than my eyesight and I can see loads of mistakes that don't really show up in the flesh. Never mind. Also, I've been enjoying this, and my favourite paint died (Goblin Green, it's survived since the early 90s), so I bought about £15 worth of new paint tonight. The textured and technical stuff is lovely.

They're looking good Doggers.

Update for me:
Paint stripping has been going on. Washing up liquid does fuck all (as expected), however Mr Muscle bathroom cleaner appears to be okay, it's very gentle but it is slowly dissolving the acrylic paint. Might try some Cillit Bang to speed it up.

On reflection, Mr Muscle Bathroom isn't strong enough really.

Pretty much finished now, just needs basing once my new paints arrive. Not decided what to do yet, but there are some very cool effects out there. In hindsight I regret not doing them as Khorne cultists. They were to be the Haemogoblins.

More work on the metal, and a bit of glazing to differentiate between the various leather textures:



And finally a black wash for the metal parts, and the details (eyes, teeth, nails). The flash is oversaturating the picture a bit, they're darker in normal light.

Meh, I've got paints that are 20 years old and have calcified crusts around the lids, and they're still fine. In fact, on going through my paints this week I only lost three or four after many years of neglect*. What I have taken to doing though is getting a brush full and wiping it off on a palette. It doesn't gunk the lip of the pot off then, gives you better control over how much is on your brush, and lets you easily add a little water if need be. It costs a bit of paint each time, but I don't think I've ever run out of a colour so that's not really an issue.

*Wow. counting them up I reckon I've got over 60 paints. Proportionally few lost to age.

Update time!

I've been successful in my paint stripping experiment.

Dish Soap in water: Fail.
Mr Muscle Bathroom Cleaner : Fail.
Cillit Bang: Fail.

Dettol: Outstanding Success.

Neat Dettol has proven to be brilliant, I just left them in soak in neat Dettol for 48 hours and the paint has come straight off just by running a finger over the model, and a quick going over with a toothbrush gets in all the nooks and crannies. The dettol/paint mix is a bit sludgey and rather slimey, so if I do it again I might go for a 75/25 mix of Dettol to water to see if I can avoid that, but apart from that I'm amazed at just how effective it has been. The models aren't damaged at all, and unlike the Cillit Bang which gives off a strong chemical smell, Dettol just means your room smells mildly of antiseptic for a while.

Picture to come tomorrow after I finish cleaning the other two off.

Fairy power spray. Left over night and removed about 95% of the paint after a 5 minute scrub with a toothbrush.
How's every one getting on with their minis? Mine are finished and I'm pretty sure Doggers is nearly done too.

The models are done, and I'm about half way through the bases now. A wash and maybe a highlight, then they can be varnished. Hopefully have them done early next week.

There's a little bit left over, especially on the base, but I'll give the dettol a pass on that as it's been so effective everywhere else.
