Basically, no, not really.
An occasional boost through an instance can help, but it's a lot of time for not great rewards.

By far the best way of speeding through levels in WoW is teaming up with people of roughly the same level and pwning quests.
Thankfully, most of the WoW regulars now have at least one alt, so there's often someone willing/able to help out.

Often times people will run an instance once or twice 'properly' (with same level party), then get multiple boosts from a lvl 80 to farm the gear. Some instance gear will quite often see you through 20 levels or more and takes the pain out of solo questing.
A lot of low level crafted stuff has just been buffed to make it more useful as well - worth checking out.

High-level chars can help outside of instances, too. While neither of you get much XP for killing the mobs, lots of them can be killed very quickly. Coupled with a bit of planning and use of a levelling guide like one of
Jame's which maximise quest efficiency by doing lots in the same area it can be a fast track. As with instances though, you only get XP from handing in the quests when doing this.
Pairing up with a similar level character for quests and a same-level group with a healer for instances is the fastest - I've nearly caught my highest-level character doing this an hour a day with a mate at work in less than half the /played time, that's including several evenings where we independently just levelled our crafting skills, so actual XP-earning time was probably half that again.

Problem with that is it's so easy just to blast off and solo for a bit, then leave the other guy behind. I made my Druid to be a healer, but I'm never near anyone else and I'm finding myself grinding even harder because healer specs aren't great for solo levelling.

Probably worth remembering to spec mostly DPS while you're levelling, even if you aren't gonna do that when you get to the end.
Otherwise, you'll end up sitting around doing not much and not getting xp.

Well as I'm new to the game I'd feel like power-levelling my first character would be slightly missing the point, but our team last night was pretty good. I have a shed-load of stuff to take off to the auction house this afternoon, and whilst I didn't get loads of XP, it was fun to run around with other 5punkers for a change. Maybe a few dungeon runs for rich drops, meaning it's easier to buy better kit and thus making it easier to solo?
Also, Jack, I heard a rumour that you can make bigger bags now. Are bags expensive to make? I'd like a bit more space, but if there are any particular bits that you need for them then let me know if there's anything I could put in the bank. However, if they're a pain then don't worry about it, but thought I'd ask.

As for build specs, I only recently discovered them, but after a bit of reading I think I'll be going for an outright Beast Mastery build.

Stuff like bags are the biggest advantage to having friends playing. Without a guild you have to get everything from drops or the AH, and it can be a lot tougher.

^Beast Mastery FTW, especially when levelling.

Just to check that I'm not talking rubbish, do the points in beast mastery apply to any pets, and then there are additional pet-specific ones post level 20? If I park a pet in the stables and get another one at, say, level 30, will they have a load of points for me to assign or do I have to level them alongside me? Think I might spend the next hour until my next meeting doing some wowwiki reading...

Beast Mastery talent points apply to all your pets, then each pet has it's own talent tree which is seperate. If you get a pet at level 30 it has a few points to spend from the start rather than having to train them up, so for example when I tamed a level 40 pet a while back as soon as it was tamed it had around 5 talent points to spend on itself.
Also, your pet will never be more than 5 levels below yourself, so if you're level 40 and tame a level 5 it will become a level 35. Same with a pet you've stabled, if you stabled it and then levelled a lot with another pet, when you withdraw your old pet it will level up to within 5 levels of you.

I'd be tempted to play a hunter just so I can have stupid pets like turtles and slime.

Don't think you can tame slime iirc? But always worth playing a hunter for the lols of having your pink flamingo chasing someone around in pvp

I don't think you can tame most slime, but I'm pretty sure I saw someone with a slime pet in Dalaran once. Unless it was a special, maybe.
Incidentally I had a flamingo pet in Guild Wars. It was awesome.

See! Now that's awesome, and is exactly why I'd want to play a hunter - to collect weird pets.
