You can install pretty much anything on to non-Windows partitions (and you can move some special folders like My Documents around using TweakUI).
That said, I personally don't see that disk partitioning really offers much benefit to a typical user (unless they're going to be booting multiple operating systems).

Usually you can install onto any/drive partition, but some apps might not like it so much (can be kind of random IME)
As far as partitioning goes, I like it if you are gonna end up with windows on a huge drive, it makes your other stuff a little safer if you have to format and such. (doesn't protect from dead/dying HDDs though)
ooh, there's a thought, does your HD maker offer a boot disc for drive fettling/repairs? might be worth a shot

Remember how I mentioned that formatting was generally not necessary?

I'd recommend using GetDataBack and trying to recover your data first, in the strongest possible terms.

Generally it isn't, but sometimes it is, so there.

I agree.

*still says that HD is not necessarily fubar* even more so if safe mode fixed it enough to retrieve 30gb of data. I still put my money on format = completely reliable hard drive
edit: and im willing to put my mouth where your cock is on that one

Or, format = hard drive that thinks it's fine, then dies horribly. again.

if it dies again then buy a new one, I just don't see the point in buying a new HD when you aren't 100% sure the old one is fucked!

Now either you meant that because-
1) your so sure of yourself that you'd suck a cock, which is faaabulous. Or
2) you typed that wrong, which is fail. Or
3) both options, where you are a faaabulous fail.
I believe the last option is the most fitting.
Edit-
faaabulous fail wrote:if it dies again then buy a new one, I just don't see the point in buying a new HD when you aren't 100% sure the old one is fucked!
Because it gives you greater prevention of data loss, a feeling of well being that new stuff brings, and because you're a faaabulous fail.

you missed one,
4) or because he believes himself to be right thus preventing the sucking of genitalia

I think you'll find opinion based on no fact covered in point 1. Your overconfidence is a danger to the stability of everyone's hdd's, never mind yours.

oh noes everybody's hard drives will fail because i'm overconfident
oh yes, and the evidence is in that 80gb hard drive on my old computer, it works fine and it had EXACTLY the same symptoms as stated as the hard drive in question. A sturdy foundation for basing my opinion even if i do say so myself

Nah, Some of us just know it's better to be safe with HDDs. the death of a porn folder can be very stressful.

Taking the pertinent (and i use the term loosely) points of that 'argument', how do you know the symptoms are the same? Answer is, you don't, therefore it isn't a sturdy foundation, it IS opinion, your right there, it is not fact and therefore you=fail.

i am not arguing because i think i am right, i am arguing because i think that it is wrong to put something in the bin just because it MIGHT fail. Yes i agree that it might put anything that resides on HD in jeopardy, but surely if you have data that you can't afford to loose you would back it up on another storage device anyway?
