Housebound (2014)

A kiwi horror comedy about a haunted house that starts off quite predictable but it's worth watching it all the way through. It's nothing totally new but it's a really fun, well made flick and you should probably watch it.

New avengers is good. Bit too much humour for my liking, but the humour bits are well timed.

I didn't mind the humour levels, nice off-set to the moody, gloomy, broody DC films. And Vision was cool as fuck.

Jurassic World

Not as bad as I thought it would be, it's a fun film that's certainly not worse than any of the previous sequels. Not much more than that though, but what would've made it way better is if they didn't overuse CGI so much, it's just lazy. (Seriously, a CGI crow?!)

Also, Bryce Dallas Howard is super hot, you guys.

Tried watching this recently and I just couldn't get into it. May give it another try.

I'm rather enjoying watching Mark Kermode film reviews at the moment - he's pompous, bombastic, and thoroughly entertaining (although I'm sure I've criticised him in the past for the first two). Here's his review of Sex and the City 2:

I've not heard anything Mark Kermode has said in quite some time, but back when he did Radio 1's film reviews I found his critiques very accurate. I could absolutely guarantee that I would like every film he hated, and hate every film he liked.

I watched Inside Out wiith Sprog today. That is a weird kids' film. It's like psychiatry for six-year-olds. Interesting though, but also pretty dark.

I enjoyed the bit where you saw inside the other people's minds. I wasn't sure on the message though - that sadness is somehow necessary.

The Martian

Mars. Reasonably hard-Sci-Fi. Engaging plot. Spaceships. Lovely scenery and shots. Matt Damon being very good. Science! and a suprising amount of humour.

If you've a passing interest in space related stuff you'll like it. 5punkers will definitely enjoy it.

Tucker & Dale Vs Evil

Rather good comedy thriller (sort of) which turns the redneck killer trope over. It's not really very scary, more slapstick with gore. It's not really laugh-out-loud funny either, although I did a few times (and kudos for that), but it is pretty good fun.

It is mildly amusing, if approximately as intellectual as Super Troopers

I'll add Super Troopers to my watch list.

Mad Max Fury Road - it was ok, but I wasn't blown away by it. My attention starting to drift during the last act. I think I may have suffered from the hype machine unfortunately.

Jurassic World - decent, fairly solid film. Not phenomenal by any means, but it's one of those films that I reckon the whole family would enjoy.

John Wick - I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this. Weirdly it has a lot of similarities with Mad Max (minimalist story, extended shooting sequences), but it just felt more contained and not overblown. Plus I'd not really heard a huge amount about it beforehand. Keanu Reeves still can't really deliver dialogue, but a lot of the scenes at the beginning where it doesn't talk are really very good - I'd never noticed before how well he can act without having to speak.

Casino Royale (a retrospective) - I'm sure I didn't like this film when it first came out; I have memories of it just being product placements and a long card game. I can only assume I was drunk when I first saw it as that recollection bears no resemblance to the film itself. Thoroughly enjoyed it this time around, and actually the card game (whilst brief in reality) is very tense. I mentioned on TS last night that I'm really enjoying Daniel Craig's Bond - they seem to be doing more of exploring the character as a truly damaged and broken person. And not in a "cool psychopath" way either, but rather in the respect that you have sympathy for an individual who has pretty much acknowledged they're broken and is only useful as a tool of government. Dalton's Bond was the first to enter this territory, but sadly he wasn't much opportunity to develop it further. I used to really enjoy Brosnan, but on subsequent viewings he just feels like an empty suit.


Question: ignoring the books, should Bond be a debonair yet ruthless figure of fun (a la Roger Moore), or a calculating killer with all his shortcomings laid bare (a la Craig)? Personally I prefer the latter. I know that Connery is everyone's favourite Bond, but again I think that time has changed my mind - I like my "heroes" with flaws.
