It was due to the latest update, it seems client-side updates are still not optional. I've updated the server and here's the details:
Minecraft Beta 1.2 is live. All servers need to be updated to 1.2.

New features:
* Note blocks (right click to tune, trigger to play)
* 15 wool dyes
* A new water dwelling mob
* New tree types
* Reeds magically turned into sugar canes. They still make paper.
* A bunch of new crafting recipes
* One secret useful block
* One secret pretty block
* Cake
* AND MOAR, probably. I forget!

Bugfixes:
* Paintings work in multiplayer
* Disconnecting while riding no longer keeps the player in the world
* A bunch more state is properly synched in multiplayer
* Fixed colors going weird on PowerPC
* Fixed a horrible chunk reload loop in singleplayer
* Fixed most lighting bugs in newly generated SMP maps
* Falling sand behaves better in SMP
* Fixed a few crash on load level bugs

How rare. I connected to mc.5punk.co.uk:25645 and it took me to a totally random place with a couple of charming randoms in it. I think one was a retard though. Or just a little short in the brain deparment.

DNS doesn't seem to be fully updated after the server move, use the IP for now if you have problems.

Crikey, some interesting stuff in this update. Worth the wait. Dye is quite interesting in the materials used. I've not found al of them yet, but there's new drops from both blocks and creatures. There's also CAEK, which means presumably you can milk cows now too. Most interesting, and unmentioned in the blog (presumably the cool useful block) is a dispenser that will eject its contents. Fill it with arrows and attach it to a switch and you presumably have a trap.

I think I read that bamboo has been retconned to sugar-cane.
The recipe for caek is egg/sugar/wheat (presumably for flour).

You could milk cows before, but the milk didn't do anything.

There's now also Charcoal, created by cooking wood in the furnace. So it should now be possible to live without consuming any un-renewable resources. Word is that this is in preparation for torches burning out...

Charcoal's the constant light source then?
Any idea what it has to be housed in? I imagine it's going to be more expensive than sticks.

I doubt it- I'd think Glow Stone Dust from the Nether would be the constant light source. Charcoal looks and acts just like Coal, although I think only Coal can be used for dye.

Notch was going to implement non extingushing lanterns last I heard, which I imagine will probably be made of gold or iron.

Pro Tip: For more efficient use of dye, apply to sheep first. Then you're likely to get multiple dyed wool blocks rather than just one.

/edit
Actually I think there's a chance you get less wool this way so it may balance out anyway.

I'm not sure I like that light-source thing. That's what I was refering to with the lanterns, Buzz.
It would make illuminating something like isengard take forever. Hopefully it's made from materials that aren't ridiculous to source.

Its not just you. Minecraft has shitted up my entire computer a few times recently, although it seems to to that more often when im watching a video and playing minecraft at the same time. Java has been updated, doesn't seem to have helped much.

It's been well behaved for me. The missing chunk problem is still not fixed though.

One of the islands will probably need some repairs, I wandered out at night thinking mobs were off then ended up trying to drag all the creepers in the world away from the already constructed area.
