Single player was what I was looking forward to, but that video with Raynor in reminded me of how I never got past the second mission in the original game where the squishy twat had to survive.

That was my stumbling block the first time I played starcraft too, I had exactly the same problem.
Turns out the key was just to defend like a motherbitch and collect a LOT of minerals.

I want to buy this, but I'm skint. I might call it my treat for next month. I also wanted the special edition (with the Thor minipet for Warcraft), but I'm damned if I'm paying £25 extra for that.

Could you not borrow said pet from someone who has bought the special edition? Or have they tied it all together in the blizzard accounts thingy?

Tied to Battle.net accounts I think.

Possibly a registering of special edition key of someone else by you to get the pet, but they keep all the extra crap? Or is it in game extra crap that they would lose out on?
I'm quite interested in the story but as I suck as rts' I will likely skip this.
Ah who the hell am I trying to kid, I'll end up buying it, failing miserably and resenting my inability to hold on to my money.

I'm not that bothered, it's only a pet. I just like the rare/Starcraft ones. I'm also shit at RTSs, but I found the original Starcraft to be eminently playable. So much so I bought the expansion. It helps that it has a healthy dose of Blizzard story and cutscenes.

I'm pretty sure you wouldn't be that bad at it if you bothered a little, even shot2bits can play half-decently and considering his permanent state of being under a stone and general confusedness, it's a fucking miracle.

Practice makes perfect, I revisited SC 5 years after playing it the first time and found out I was suddenly able to play just fine, and gasp, progress through the story without cheating (which uncovered some awesome in-game dialogue) too.
The new Single Player should be a little more forgiving with difficulties ranging from "Very Easy" to "Insane", as opposed to the original, which was hard-coded to "BASTARD".

I think in most cases I don't have the inclination to try to get past a hard mission (Company of Heroes for example) because all I'll have to look forward to is even harder missions. However, in the case of Starcraft there were only a couple of really hard missions and I wanted to progress because I wanted to see how the story progressed. Might have also been to get to play the other campaigns (which were also a progression of the story), I seem to remember you had to unlock them.

They suggested you completed the other ones first before you played through as the other races, as it was a progression of the story, showing a sort of 'meanwhile' view to the previous campaign - but you can skip and start from whatever point you want at any time.

I'm on the fence about getting this. The campaigns do looks awesome, but core gameplay mechanics seem exactly like like the original, which to me were polished but bland, no extra layers on top of the standard "build through build/tech trees, make army, kill enemy". The only thing that really kept me playing through the original C&Cs and AoEs was the story, and that's something an RTS shouldn't really be trying to excel in.
I never did play multiplayer though, and whether or not I'll enjoy it in SC2 is what will make me decide on getting it or not. £35 is a lot to pay just for the campaign. So questions... am I wrong about SC2 being a bit bland and repetative at the core base/army building level, and if I'm not wrong will the franticness/rush/thrill of multiplayer battles make that short coming insignificant?
