Useful tools and toys.

If you touch your software enough does it become hardware?

Windows Desktop Search

Microsoft made search addon, seems decent without the security issues of google desktop and such, takes a while to index for a start (and won't index when you're using the computer unless you horse it)

http://www.drivermax.com/ - allows you to easily export and import all your Windows drivers
http://mozy.com/home - Online backup. 2Gb for free or £2.50 p/month for unlimited storage. (I'm storing 40Gb of my photos on it and use the Pro version for work where you pay per Gb)

If you've got a USB Key, this can be very handy:

http://portableapps.com/

The suite has pretty much everything you might need, or you can just install the base menu and then choose your own apps. It will work with any program that's built to be portable, not just he ones they host, so for example I have put InfraRecorder on mine, so I can burn a CD on any computer with a burner without needing any software installed on the PC. Really quite handy bit of kit, especially if you've got a USB drive you don't use that's about 1GB or so.

Firefox with the PicLens extension.

Then once installed and restarted, go to http://flickr.com/groups/5punk/pool/ hover over a picture and press the little "play" button that pops up.

Then drag the mouse around, click things and play, you'll get the hang of it.

Works with a lot of the main photo sites.

If anyone has an X-fi and gets sick of/doesn't bother changing modes then you might like this: http://spectra9.com/xfmc/xfmc.html

It does all that for you automatically, you just have to tell it what programs/games should use which mode.

Tis very good, but I've had trouble with it in the past, mainly due to driver memory leaks when changing modes, and because I use ASIO a fair bit, which doesn't seem to like the mode changing.

AutoRuns from Sysinternals

Tells you what is running at startup, what is registered as a DLL, what kicks off when you fire up explorer, what services are running, basically really really useful for tracking down what that wierd shit is on startup (other than Windows).

Useful tip: remove MS certified stuff from the view and then refresh, it'll make the list much shorter

Teracopy

Windows file copy/move replacement, absolute must have if you use Fista and do a lot of file transfers, I find it to be considerably faster than the built in one.

Easily installed and removed, not evil IME.

Idrive

2gb of free online backup (150gb if you pay £2.50/mo) comes with very handy app for backing stuff up, also supports proper versioning, and backing up as you work.

Well worth sticking onto more critical machines to save you from actually having to have a decent/viable backup strategy :)
