Also PSUs only pull what they need, having a larger capacity one doesn't automatically make your fuses blow and electricity bill go up - it's just sensible to have enough overhead to cover what you might need, and the reliability/stability to keep a system solid.
My Enermax has been good, but went beyond that to amaze me last week. I had two brownouts - where the lights all flickered and went dim for a while. My main PC carried on regardless, whereas all the others in the house were beeping and rebooting.

My current box is a X2 Shuttle, with a 7800GTX. Whilst I might be able to fiddle a bit to get better performance, I erred on the "fuck it; spend as much as you can afford" side.HereComesPete wrote:Wooo, sheriff has a berk card!

The PSU is overkill, and I'm not entirely sure with regard to the mobo, however with this being a "normal" box, I figure I can upgrade the various parts as and when necessary.

All the goodies arrived this morning in good order. The build went without a hitch and my new toy is now working perfectly.
The only minor niggle is the case. Everything fits ok but there is an annoying lack of places to secure the cables. None of the case fans have guards, on the inside, so I had to do some real fiddling to route the octopus-like PSU cables away from them.
System temps are good; around 35c for chip and case whilst idle (I've yet to test it under load). The 8800 is idle at 58-60c, which is higher than I would like but it is factory OC'd, and apparently a normal temp.
All-in-all, very happy so far

It's being given to the mater and pater because I'm fed up with them complaining about their 2.4 p4 with 512 of ram pos dell being slow, I know it's slow, I did tell them it would be and I did also tell them I'd put moar ram in, loathe as I am to touch the inside of one of those bloody things, they said no. 2.4 p4 with 512 of ram, pah! My mater had a Pentium 2 with 64MB of ram! Couldn't even fit more ram if I'd wanted to, and I even looked.

The thing is, it took them long enough to upgrade from a pentium mmx 233 to the p4. I think it was a millennium deal at dell online that swayed my dad. 
They view pc's as tools, not shinies. Even though both of them have a new car every three/four years and a new tv every other year, and they decided to buy double glazing and a few grands worth of orthopaedic bed, a few hundred quid on a new pc is far too much money for them.
Also, they both use pc's in work every day and those pc's are both 3-4 times faster, yet they eye me with great suspicion if I even mention putting moar ram in their home machine, it's not like I've built a few systems or anything...
