should i restart and try again or is that a bad idea?

my opinion, do not restart. wait, wait and wait
I'd say 3 hours+ is a reasonable time to be thinking... "fuck, this things stuck" when doing a thorough chkdsk

fucksocks.

i got impatient and reset it.

left it on over night (approx. 9 hours) and got up to find it on 23%

then i turned it off

:S :S :S :S :S

i'm guessing its probably pretty dead by now, but i'm thinking that if i can get it to boot into windows i should just get all my <s>important documents</s> ilegally downloaded tv shows and porn on to my other disk and get a new one to stick windows on.

i assum i can just stick a new sata drive in boot up with the xp cd and install it

Hmm, even less than last time, what would cause that, a bot arm failure? If you can find a way off getting stuff off it, move it and new disk, sounds totally fucked.

The first bit would certainly be a good plan, I'm sure eion or cheeseandham will help with the other bit *too fucked to do tech support atm*

Here's what I'd recommend:
- Get a new disk
- Put the new disk in the computer and remove the other ones (carefully).
- Install XP on to the new disk, patch it up, put antivirus software on, and install GetDataBack.
- Put the old bad disk back in as well.
- Run GetDataBack on it to recover as much of your data as possible. This will most likely take a very long time.
- Once you've got everything off of the old bad disk, check to see if it's still under warranty. If so, then format it and RMA. If not then sell it on eBay use it as a source of fridge magnets.
- Enjoy.

- Take drive out, remove screws in the drive, open disk up. Do it in the living room as they are well known Class 1 clean rooms.
- Spray with foam.
- Wipe foam off.
- Put in washing machine on 90oC for 1 hour.
- Put in tumble dryer to dry to recover as much of your data as possible. This will most likely take a very long time. >2 hours.
- Put the old bad disk back in
- Switch on
- Enjoy.

I may have sugested it already, but do you have any jam? Failing that, I was impressed at the amount of stuff GetDataBack recovered for me when I fucked up my last reformat.

my paintball air bottle is only 3000psi so that should be ok, but i've done the cleaning bit now anyway.

i tried to skip chkdsk when i booted up just now by pressing the any key, but it ignored me and carried on doing chkdsk again, which i'm assuming will get stuck again.

i think i've really fuxored my disk

gonna have to get a new one i reckon. and slipstream a copy of xp sp2

also, if i were to get a 5oogb disk and make a small partition just for windows and a larger partition for other programs and general detritus how big should i make the windows partition?

Sounds possible, you might get away with a format or such, but it sounds ill.

That really depends how many games etc you generally have installed. I'd probably go for a 65GB windows partition and a 400GB porn partition.

ok i figured something like that, but would i be able to install stuff on to the non windows partition, or does it have to go on to the same partition as the operating system?
