SUPER (2010)

Awesome, genuinely good film. Not sure if it's been released in the UK yet, but it's sweepable. Along the same theme of Kick-Ass yet grittier and more realsitic. Also,
Spoiler:
Ellen Page
rapes
Spoiler:
Rainn Wilson
, which is something to behold. SHUT UP CRIME.

Super is surprisingly good, in this post-Kick-Ass world. And brutal.

Watched it last night, there are moments that make you laugh and then you think "Wait, I shouldn't be laughing at that, its brutally violent!!", very good and thought provoking in a subliminal way.

And yes Boltie is hot! :)

True, that. I thought it was going to be a bit of silly fun a la kick-ass, but it was much better than that.

Also true. I really enjoyed psychotic Ellen Page, even though I probably shouldn't.

Green Lantern

Can't say I was too impressed with it, they tried too hard to cram every bit of information about the green lantern into a two hour film and even though I could follow it just fine, it felt very forced. There's a bit where they train Hal Jordan which takes about ten minutes and is not in a montage, they just throw some imaginary boulders at him and he has a fight with some pink guy and voila! he's ready to be a green lantern. And the ending just doesn't make much sense.
Joose might be happy to know he only makes a giant fist twice, and the first time he does it is by accident.
The battlefield 3 trailer that they showed before the film excited me far more than the film did. It was even more exhilarating knowing it was being made about a mile away from the cinema we where in.

I'm clearly missing the point of spending money to make this film. I realise it is supposed to be somewhat tongue-in-cheek, but all I saw was an hour and a half of crap script, pointless violence and not a great deal else. I liked Kick Ass, and Ellen Page is destined for great things, but this is just comic-nerd wank which goes no-where and presumes that the daft twats that enjoy this crap will rate it simply because everyone else does. Let's just leave left-field comic books in print and stop wasting time on this crap.

But hey, I'm getting old and increasingly cynical.

I dare say someone is working on the screenplay as we speak.

Perhaps we over-hyped it for you. Other than the silliness of it I enjoyed the unusual take on the concept of a hero. And in the end he saves the girl, despite his ineptitude, but can never save himself. Or something like that.

I'll hold my hands up and admit I was perhaps expecting something more. I don't mind "unusual" films, but this just did nothing for me. The anti-hero thing is all well and good, but if you are going down that road I'd like it to say ... something. The characters were entirely forgettable, the story was, at best, a gonzo porn story, and the violence was nothing more than titillation. Meh, I'm probably being over-critical anyway. Just old and grumpy, and pissed-off with mainstream cinema.

Super
Ellen page gooood. Story okay, violence enjoyable, jokes bearable.

Captain America
Good acting from Mr. USA, Hugo Weaving not a very good German, impressive "shrunken body" graphical magic.
The part where he gets his proper shield/suit is them immediately followed by a action-packed montage where he inexplicably uses his circular shield like a boomerang at right-angles. This is never explained. Feels as though they cut out his first footsteps into beating Nazi ass short due to the lengthy preamble, and had to rush in to the "Kill the bad guy" scenes as quickly as they could. It was slightly jarring.

After-credits is a trailer for The Avengers movie.
Mmm.. Scarlet Johansen.

Trolljegeren (The troll hunter)

The trailer for this film made it seem like a shakycam horror movie about trolls. Fair enough I thought, trolls hasn't really been done before (well, I guess there's this) so why not watch it?
Turns out it isn't actually a horror movie, it's a dry comedy/mockumentary about the titular troll hunter; a fat bearded man in a land rover that works as the nation's (Norway) sole troll hunter. A university camera crew follows him around, and the entire film is thus filmed in shakycam. Luckily it's no blair witch and the shakycam is very well done and doesn't do the lazy thing, such as show us blurry images and running feet too much.
Otto Jespersen is great as a the troll hunter, and the effects are very well done considering the film's low budget. It's well, well worth a watch if you don't mind subtitles.

:above:

The trolls are look good as well. It must be relatively easy to do convincing CG these days, what with all the low-budget stuff I've seen with well realised monsters, etc.

Strangely compelling. Not sure whether to be disturbed or irritated by it. Music's very good and quite clever, but rather like TRON Leggy the whole OST is by an existing group - Chemical Brothers in this case. The rest of it is a strange mix between arty farty and action hero. Weird.

Yeah it had a little too much pretentious camera work (especially that bit with the camera spinning around the concrete tunnel, wholly unnecessary and pointless). Once you get past that though, it's got some really great action in it. I enjoyed it.
