I felt Air Combat in BF3 was nearly there, a few alterations would have made it perfect:

1) Fixed AA positions dotted around the maps, near or inbetween control points, so that anyone on a team actually had a chance of defending from an airbourne attack, not just one class which only worked with a specific equipment set (although the option for a dedicated AA trooper should be present to defeat good pilots and make AA coverage mobile).

2) Increased flight ceilings to let the planes actually dogfight in the skies alongside the inclusion of bombers dedicated to ground attack and the removal of the ground attack role from fighters to make sure the fighters are focusing on air superiority only.

3) Aerial out-of-bounds zoning applied to aircraft also being applied to parachuting pilots so bailing out wasn't delayed death as there was no way to guide the parachute back over the allowed game field in time.

Hopefully BF4 will put a bit more variety in the aircombat game.

This ^ Especially the AA. Felt they needed to increase damage slightly too. I liked the air combat in BEEF2 as well, didn't think that was unbalanced.

Is it still the case in BF3 that a helicopter can sit in the middle of the map shooting down jets? From a pilot's perspective that always felt pretty odd.

Yes, and it's one aspect that really stuffs up BF3's aircombat. Attack choppers in the right load out are good against *everything*.

I nearly altered my above post to say that removing attack choppers would improve the game quite a bit. Transport helis in their place would have been/have previously been awesome.

Sadly, this ^

But I'm not quite sure what they could do to fix this, without ruining a part of the game.

Simple enough, give the heli guns a longer travel time, more like the APCs, so that they're harder to hit a moving target with, then make the cannons on jets more effective against helis. That shouldn't make helis less effective against ground targets as they generally aren't fast moving, and means a jet with a long run against a high flying heli could probably bring it down in one pass. Jets should be the hard counter against helicopters and similarly should be pretty ineffective against ground targets (apart from the ground attack planes, who should also be vulnerable to fighters). At the moment it seems to be that a decent pilot can kill anything almost with impunity. I don't know how air-to-air battles pan out, but given that any time I'm being jet-raped we usually have several on the pan I think they must be similarly one-sided.

You can now adjust your weapon loadout from the Battlelog website. This should have been in from the start, but at least we've got it now.

And I'm now a fully paid up premium account holder, I gave EA more money. :(
Close Quarters is pretty good fun though, for pretty mindless run 'n' gun. Since I don't have the latest CoD it fills that space quite well.

Oh! I was using that last night and thought it was always there, I'd just never bothered to look. Either way, it's very handy, especially if you're looking for certain achievements.

Ah yeah, I'd said I'd do that.

My impressions from playing last night:
  • New maps are impressively large. Large enough to suck if you're without at least a quad bike or jeep to zoom around in.
  • The maps are beautiful to look at as well. Beautiful snow capped mountains towering above a tiny half-frozen fjord, wide open rolling hills, the work they've done building these maps is well worth the price of admission, IMO.
  • The Tank Destroyers are pretty awesome. As fast as the IFVs but with the firepower of the MBTs. Totally baller.
  • Getting in the gunship is hard on a full server, like all other aircraft. It's controlled by who owns a particular control point denoted by a big plane icon next to it. It's incredibly powerful, but isn't too hard to take out, and it only flies in a big circle over the map. Also, when your team controls the gunship, it can be used as a mobile spawn point that gives you an instant paradrop. It's really handy for accessing control points that would be hard to get to on the ground.
  • ROCKETILLERY!!! The rocket trucks are incredibly slow and aiming is really difficult to judge. If you can see where your rockets are hitting it's much easier to be effective. The real big downside is that when you're shooting you appear on the mini-map, just like when you're using mortars. You can drive away after shooting off a salvo, but you're easy prey for helicopters and jets if they're paying attention to the map.
  • Quad bikes are back! They're pretty fast and predictably squirmy at speed, but you can get some wicked air on one. This of course usually leads to you flying head on into rocks or trees and blowing up but it's so much fun to hit those sweet jumps.
  • Tank Superiority mode can be a fun diversion occasionally. Basically everyone gets a MBT or a Tank Destroyer and fights over one central control point. No spawning on teammates at all, so you're basically forced to spawn at your base and grab whatever armored vehicle is handy and rushing out to defend or capture the point. Disappointingly, the maps are smaller versions compared to when in Conquest, so as usual Conquest should be the order of the day, but mixing it up with some Tank Superiority can be great.
So basically if the idea of LOTS OF TANKS (and diet tanks) romping around XBOX HUEG LOL maps sounds appealing, Armored Kill is probably for you.

I am sure this boat has passed, but BF3 for an Ayrton is not a bad deal.

I know i am a thread killer extraordinaire, but i am posting anyway.

BF 1942 is Freddy Freemans on Origin at the moment. Not sure how long for or any other real details of interest as it seems hard as nails getting anything to link easily from Origin.

I spotted that. Not sure I can be bothered downloading it though, I struggle with the age of BF2.

Good find, will give it a go, for about 10 mins probably. I came late to the series and my first BF was number 2. Mildly curious what the ORIGINal was like.

Vanilla Beef is awesome.. very different game mechanic to Beef2, a bit like COD UO compared to any newer variety of COD.

If they are now giving it away I would say get it.
