Well I said I'd go up the ladder after everyone else is safely up there, so I suppose I'm waiting on Bits.

Initiative:
19,+2 = 21

Woo! I act swiftly to hold the ladder.

Okay, the bird actually got a better initiative than Thor there, but seeing as he caught it by surprise I'll let him have that stellar shot, and count this as a surprise round. Normal initiative follows. The library is roughly 60' diameter, and the ladder hatch comes out in the middle, so you get your point blank bonus.

You're all working under your Flat Footed armour classes (something I keep forgetting) till you've had your first proper turn. They should be listed on your character sheet. This includes the bird, which I guess was flat-taloned? Thor is no longer flat footed, as he's taken his first turn.

The arrow zips across the dark room and hits the bird in the chest, it gives a loud squawk and starts to flap its wide wings. Thick, black, oily feathers start to fly all over the place, and the fiendish raven starts to change shape. Beneath its glossy coat are a pair of leathery swamp-green wings, its body bloats and sheds its covering too, bones popping and creaking. Its pointed beak and sleek head round off to the shape of a gaunt, horned human skull, black blood dripping from its open jaws.

The bird is now quite obviously some sort of demon, standing a little under three foot tall with a pointed tipped tail flailing behind it. It reaches up to its chest with clawed hands and tears the arrow out, tossing it to the floor with an ear-piercing screech.

Forenrond, Thor, please make will saves :D
Get 10 or below and you're "Frightened" as per the status effect.
Get 11 or above and you're "Shaken" as per the status effect.
I'll let you resist it entirely if you get 20+

Well that was unexpected! At least it dropped a load of feathers.

I don't know what (if any) bonus I get, I'm away from my PC. I'll check later but I doubt it's +7.

EDIT: It's +2, so 15 total. I'm shaken from having a huge bird poo a demon on me.

Good times, a shaken character takes a –2 penalty on attack rolls, saving throws, skill checks, and ability checks. This only lasts one round though, so you'll be fine by next round.

Initiative order is:
Monster
Glibberig (bottom of the ladder)
Forenrond (by tiled opening)
Thor (atop ladder)
Orovan (bottom of the ladder)

Glib, yer' up! You can't see what's up there, but you certainly heard it screech.

Glibberig continues his ascent up the ladder, simultaneously checking his pockets for bird whistles.

If all you're doing is moving, then you'll get up to where Thor is by the end of your turn.

Forenrond's up next!

I'm hoping I can whip out my rapier and stab it in the bum. Has it seen me?

A draw action is a move action apparently, but since I'm sort of underneath it I'm assuming that won't be an issue.

Oh. Probably missed anyway. I can see this is the adventure of mighty rolls. On the offchance I hit;

Shankley uses RAPIER on BIRD DEMON. It's not very effective.
In case I get the sneak attack bonus:

I get the feeling there's a lot of redundant rolling I've made there.

If possible I would like to retcon my previous post, so that instead of searching for bird whistles Glibberig will instead be trying to imitate the mating call of a raven.
Glibberig wrote:Caw! Caaaaw!
It is highly unlikely it sounds like the mating call of a raven, let alone a raven at all.

A draw action is free as part of a move action if you have a base attack bonus of at least +1. It would be silly walking up to a monster then standing in front of it fumbling with your scabbard while it eats your face off. Charging/running (to cover extra distance), sheathing a weapon or drawing two weapons uses all your actions though.

At the risk of making things complicated..

Image

Monster's in 7B, Thor's in 7G, Forenrond's in 7M
Orovan and Glibberig are on the level below.
Grimmie wrote:off towards the opposite edge (I know, it's circular..) from where Forenrond's emerging, Thor spots a large bird's nest and the outline of a large black bird inside.
I sense there might have been confusion, so feel free to re-take your go.

I totally misread that as I had such a vivid image in my mind of being pooed on by a demon bird. In that case I shall twat it with an arrow.

I'm half glad that you're not in it's face, so I don't have to attempt a ranged attack with in-melee modifiers with shaky, nervous hands, but a little worried that not only do I now unexpectedly turn out to be nearest, but also in direct line of your arrow's flight. I'm sure Forenrond took a step or two to the side or closer to avoid shooting his buddy in the back, though.

At close to maximum range I imagine it'll be arcing above you anyway, but yeah I'll try not to stick you.

Okay, really sorry for the delay. I have been deliberating the balance of this encounter, (fiddling with numbers) I have no idea how it's gonna pan out, we'll see. It will be an exciting and potentially fatal experiment, hooray!

The arrow zips across the room and sinks in to the beast's left pectoral. It gives a screech and tugs the shaft from its bleeding chest, leaving the head buried inside, then tosses it to the ground.

Glibberig!
