Hah, I'd mentally set myself up to assume I'd contributed something constructive. We should head up to the loft, but I'm considering climbing up to the hole to block its escape.

Well I'm going to climb up and have a look anyway. Cover me from the inside please.

I'll go into the library and try to find a window near the hole I can lean out of and latch my grappling hook onto, assuming the librarians don't object. If they do I'll offer to let them clear out the dire raven themselves. Then assuming I get a solid hook I'll shimmy up and have a look.

The MRB states that you should make the grapple roll for me because a bad failure might leave it falling off while I'm climbing it. Eek. My Use Rope skill is 5.

You know, those climbing rules are silly. If you fail by 5 or more on the Use Rope roll you fall off. If you fail by 5 or more on the climb roll you fall off. If you use a rope to help you climb you have to make two rolls, meaning you have two chances to fall off.

Using a rope and grapping hook against a wall (Your rope check) does however reduce your climb DC by 20, so I think the rule's sound. Also you have a chance of hilarious* consequences if you fluff the roll. Apparently I have to do the grappling hook rope check for you, so I'll do that once I have collected my thoughts, and anyone else what wants to get in to position has.

Orovan will head into the library and assuming Shankley already spoke to them will approach a librarian

Thor, too will take the indoor route, trying to time it (if possible) that we arrive at about the same time as our climber. If Orovan's line of questioning doesn't get us results, he'll tell them there's a murderer in their loft.

I shall accompany Orovan to the library, keeping my eyes peeled for wizards casting spells of silence.

The Librarians do initially object to you shimmying in to the disused roof space, but concede that they've been meaning to remove the birds from there for some time, and if there's a monsterous one up there, they'd rather the local band of adventurers took a go at it than them. They offer to lower the ladder extending up through the centre of the library, if it makes it easier for you or your team-mates to access the area.

Forenrond swings his rope up to the edge of the conical roof, and the grappling hook takes a firm hold of the ledge inside.
(I've done the use rope roll for you, you have to beat a DC of 5 on climb, and you have a skill of 4, so just roll anything but a 1.)

Sweetlips get down from there - dogs can't climb ladders. You stand guard here.

Hah, a two. No effort wasted. WotC dice roller works on my phone, but copy and paste doesn't.

Do we want to do this quietly, or make a big noise and see if anything pops its head out at the top?

If the former, I have a few points in sneaking (although I'm not sure it works up a ladder), if the latter I'll draw my bow and aim it at the hole.

I reckon sneaky. I shall be as quiet as I can whilst holding the ladder.

I'll be sneaky on the outside (if I can), so that I can intercept them if they run or backstab them if they fight.

There's the brief sound of movement from within the roof space as Forenrond and Thor move up towards it.

At the top of the ladder, Thor finds a small open hatch which the ladder extends from.

It's dim inside, save for the light streaming in through the missing tiles which illuminates the area Thor pops up through. There are short columns of dusty bookshelves standing haphazardly around the interior. Some are upright and some are on their sides, old leather-bound tomes spilt out open at random pages, cobwebs keeping them in a fixed position. From a few of the shelves there's the sound of movement, but even Thor's puny human eyes can make out the outline of a nest between two tall, frayed bookends and the beady eyes of its feathered resident. It looks pretty normal though. There's a flutter of wings from above, there are a few more nests in the rafters.

I will proceed to the interior where there is secure footing. Thank fuck the rope held.
