I enjoy walking the dog just after getting dark (I don't wait until then to walk the dog, just happens sometimes) because I can get a good look in other people's houses when they have their light on and open curtains. I AM LOOKING IN YOUR HOUSE. I can't handle it myself either, have to close the curtains, because of people like me.

I also stare into peoples front rooms when walking at night and they have left the light on/curtains open. Its not even a conscious choice, my head just automatically points towards the light. Maybe my eyes are moths.

If I am at home and someone looks through my window whilst walking past I take great delight in staring right back at them.

Where would all the storage space come from for hours and hours of video footage for thousands of people? We struggle with a day's worth of event logs on a domain controller. As a precedent it's a valid concern though, I'll give you that.

YouTube manages fine with holding/processing masses of video, checking if it matches a database of copyrighted audio/video then streaming it to a fuckpile of users.

Yeah, but even though YouTube gets a whole load of video piled on it every day, its only a relatively small percentage of YouTube users who upload anything at all, and those that do probably only upload, at most, a couple hours a day. If all of a sudden every user was uploading 24 hours of video on a daily basis I suspect even YouTubes mighty servers would feel the strain, but that's essentially what would have to happen if every Xbox/PlayStation/computer with a camera attached was to be used as a government monitoring method.

Plus YouTube *makes* money by doing all of this, through advertising etc. It only survives because the astronomical cost of running all that gear is outweighed by the even more astronomical amount of money it gets as income. Typically, governments do not have astronomical amounts of money lying around.

I daresay the comms infrastructure would suffer horribly too. Our shitty old copper cables can't handle a game download without your provider throttling you, such is the lack of available bandwidth.

The device runs 2 virtual machines. One for the apps and one for games (and video?). The apps VM is started as soon as the box is powered and runs at low power so it draws minimal electricity, less heat generated and thus less fan noise. So the app VM can be doing stuff all the time, social apps, update downloads, whatever. When a game is started the other VM comes into play and this allow the instant switching between game and apps, as demonstrated, because both VMs are running.

So if I buy this as a games machine, I'll never get 100% of its power dedicated to the one thing I want it to do?

I also get the impression that the forums where people are complaining are generally PC-centric anyway (like us for example). Just because PC gamers are (currently) shouting the loudest, doesn't mean there isn't a huge demand and market for this machine.

I'm sure this is all speculative at the moment.

It's a shame that with all the smart technology the engineers put together when implemented, the question won't be: "How do we use all this tech to make the best experience for the user?". It'll be more like: "How do we get the maximum money out of the consumer?".

I spent a fortune on my pc and now it can't run anything more demanding than Bad Company 2. Yet my 360 plays everything no bother. From BF3 to Skyrim with no hassle from drivers and internal upgrades. I can't afford the time or money anymore to try and stay in the hardware loop that pc gaming demands.

I can justify £400 for an Xbox One as the kids can use Kinect 2.0, I can get rid of the Bluray player under the tv and the missus is more understanding of Xbox time as at least im sitting next to her on the couch.

All the moaning about the fee for preowned games and an always on connection doesn't bother me. Same for the camera always on. I'll just get a new copy on sale if I do want a particular game so no fee, my Internet connection is perfectly stable and I'm sure I'd just play or do something else if it did drop. As for the camera. Hell if they want to see a fat Scot swearing amd getting the rage then feel free to watch as I don't care.

I think I'm just going to get a PS4. Gran Turismo, bitches!

Xbox one for the sprog, PS4 for the living room.

I've always said this when PC gamers bemoan the rise of consoles - it's their own snobbiness that is causing people to turn to easy to use systems. I have no background in computers at all and, as you know, struggle with the many technical aspects of PC maintenance - yet I am considered super PC savvy by people IRL (the fools).

Look on many technical forums and it's full of self entitled ball bags who think that everyone should be able to strip and reassemble a PC blindfolded ("you should know exactly how the thing you own works!"). Well, fuck off. I have neither the time nor the patience to train myself, nor insanity to attend a night school. Yes, console gaming is dumbing down, but it's easy to see why people turn to it.
