My Steam key and installation works fine - though it has been updated to 8a and I've only just started a game in 7a. The savegames are rarely backwards-compatible (7 was supposed to be, but caused a crash for me) so if you have the option it might be worth grabbing and installing a version outside of Steam, while like DF it is a game best enjoyed by leaving all the sieges and difficulty at the default and starting over a lot, sometimes I like to just build fantastical warrens without the fear of disaster.

Fuck. When did it become 0430?

This game is worse than OTTD. It's Dorfcrack meets Minecrack with an easy to use interface.

Currently 20% off (£8) in the Steam sale for a short while, if anyone's curious.

Got bought it for Christmas by a friend (cheers, Kamen) but it doesn't run on my netbook. It just quits on launch.

The developers say it's a graphics issue that "They can't do anything about".

Thanks, devs. Thevs.

Bought this today cause steam sale meant I could be arsed to.

All my people die horribly. I'm a bad human! Tutorials are shit on it, very buggy for me. Either that or I was having a blonde moment with the controls, which isn't so out of the ordinary for me.

I've never encountered any bugs, but it does have a weird interface. I find it's easier if I flatten the layer (one of the icons by the minimap). And yes, my guys die all the time too.

You can turn off the sieges in the game options which improves survivability, as you then only get new monsters when you dig. That way you can at least arm everyone and attract a few heroes to clear the surface of gribblies and then dig carefully, making sure areas are reasonably clear before sending people down to dig more tunnels or pick up the stuff used to make better weapons and armour.

The market is a good way to get nice armour, but it's good to create stockpiles near it of stuff you'll be selling so the townies don't have to travel too far. The biggest killer for me is distance, so I try to make boots of haste for all of them, as without them they often end up starving.

Keeping the heroes and townies sleeping quarters seperate is a good idea for when the monsters follow them up, as is having only one way in and out of the dungeons, which you can line with traps. You can create alternate ways down to resources like metal and wall those areas off from the rest of the dungeon.

I've just learned to take it slow through many, many iterations of dead townies and failed villages. Which is kind of what the game's all about.

I think I had one town which didn't end in a huge graveyard and all the residents being massacred, and that was mainly because I spent most of my time mining and building a huge castle (then there was an update and I started again).

I haven't even gotten half an hour without starving them all yet, and what is it with the bloody mill thing?? It just won't let me place a masons bench to be able to make a mill. I've tried everything, it's coming up green so it's like I can place it, it just won't let me build it. I even have all the stuff to build it but it's just not happening.

Have you put down a room for it? As in the floors of the rooms. You can only build items on the appropriate floor.

Yep, stone floor. That's what the tutorial said to put down, I think.

To build a mill, you need:

Wood (from trees) -> Carpentry (floor) -> Carpenter's Bench -> Stone (from mining) -> Wood Detailer -> Masonry (floor) -> Mason's Bench

Then it just takes three stone and two wood I think.

I usually start with tilling and planting apple/pear trees though and use that to feed them by setting the numbers in the menu on the left to make them always have that number auto-picked.

yeah if its still how it used to work you have to create a carpentry zone (from the zones button on the bottom toolbar) this is the same for everything pretty much. Zones don't cost anything to place and you can put them down straight away before you start actually building anything to plan your town out a bit

I did the zones thing. Carpentry and masonry ones. Had all bits needed. I think I'm just missing something by my own blondeness. Will look at it again later.

Apparently all development on this has stopped now. The frontman, Burningpet, left last month and there was apparently some bad feelings over how the Steam launch went (while he was away on honeymoon). The other guy, Xavier, apparently has pretty much just cut it loose and waiting for the Steam profit to tick in. Luckily Towns is in a pretty playable state and (I think) a good game as it. Shame development has stopped. Interesting though for future reference and how any given early access (or indeed any pay-in beta) game can just take your money and run. A warning for all of us there I think.

Dang. Are there mod tools out for it at least?
