one more thing, will it come with all the sata cables etc that i need?

edit: and i'm not gonna have any trouble with sata drivers or anything am i? if i just stick everything together and stick in the windows dvd when it boots up it should al just work right?

The motherboard should yes

You may need SATA drivers, but those will normally be bundled with on a floppy, or provided on a CD to transfer to floppy or direct from the disc

You probably wont need one what with modern motherboards, I've never had to use floppy drivers for SATA installs

Bloody hell, lots of peeps talking here whilst I've been knocking out the z's.

You didn't need the thermal paste, the retail cpu is supplied with some on the heatsink.

That card is a bargain, don't ever buy a 2900 they are shite, the new ati ones are rather good, but not that one.

You'll not need a sloppy drive, the drivers will be on a cd. I'd say hold on to the hdd, it might just work, it won't fuck up the rest of the system, just leave it unconnected until after everything else is installed and going.

You may not get enough sata cables if you've got a lot of hdd's going in, just take some out the old one in case.

Think that covers it, oh and make sure you tell your mate his mesh is shite, over-priced and slower than yours, even if it's lies.

should i put more thermal compound on the processor/heatsink? it has some on already but it isn't a huge amount, its kind of three strips

I always clean new CPU's and re-do the paste to my own satisfaction. It's probably not necessary, but it makes me feel better You need to make sure you know what you are doing though, too little and your new toy will asplode, too much and it will slowly cook itself.

Probably not, normally when a heatsink is supplied with the compound on it, just leave it be it'll do the job.


Build tips:

Do it slowly
Do it in segments (eg, case in mobo, put in cpu/ram/psu/graphics and test, if works, add hdd's and other bits).
Barring the heaksink (depends on design) horse should never be used, nor should percussive maintenance.

NO. Less is more when it comes to thermal compound. If there's protective tape covering the existing thermal compound, make sure that comes off.

Touch exposed metal piping, aka, find a radiator, touch the bit of the not coated pipework.

Oh, and don't wear nylon/wool.
