Because I say so.
But really, you're right I could give you numbers. I was going to, but then I decided I didn't want you to understand the vagaries of where you are in terms of combat and I want you all guessing. If it was a mundane set of events I would list the mods +/- and this would be covered by your combat skills.
As I'm driving this with story, those of you on the roof who prosper in the fight will benefit in terms of character.
Those down below researching will too, but in a different way.
Unless you die of course.
As for the shot, the nearest enemy shape you correctly identify as a giant bat/fly creature. Your shot zips through it like a hot ball bearing through blubber, the smell is similar. It screeches a deafening roar and collapses past you, it's entrails flowing and spurting ichor pumping from its grievous wound.
Pants et al on floor - I'm sorry I didn't make the library bit clearer. Jasper and Firenza explain their shreds of evidence in hushed tones to Phlegastus, away from Aiden and his still feverish reading.
I'll cover this in more depth after the bullet time otherwise I'll maybe skimp it a bit and that's not fair on you guys.

Fair enough.
Next bit of combat?

Can I attempt to do any kind of attacks or am I just stuck holding my ground?

You can't attack as you've already said you're going on full defence, this means no active attacking on your part as your concentrating fully on dodging anything.
A shape darts from the dust storm, flashing past Jon as it dives with talons ready to strike. Jon doesn't even see it. Lucky for him it's aiming at Alvrin.
It looks a bit more raptor than bat and is quite a bit smaller than the thing Lex took down, it's quite a lot faster too. Alvrin picks it up late but has enough time to attempt evasion.
It lances down with wings swept back and swoops at Alvrin's head, scoring a weak 2 hits.
Deject - you can dodge - (dodge + dodge + reaction) or (dodge + melee combat skill + reaction)
You can parry - (melee combat skill x2 + reaction)
Or you can gymnastics dodge (dodge + reaction + gymnastics)
I would imagine you'll roll parry as this gives you the most dice.

Right, Swords x 2 (14) + 4 = 18 dice
5, 6, 5, 2, 1, 5, 5, 5, 4, 6, 5, 3, 4, 5, 6, 1, 3, 6: 11 hits.
11. hahahahahahahaaha

Unsurprisingly the swoop from the creature misses, it screeches as you bat it deftly aside and disappears into the dust clouds with a frantic beating of wings.
Fab! It's your turn, so roll me a perception test to see if you can actually spot anything to attack. Or do as deject did and declare full defence so you stop wandering off.

Perception (3): 5, 1, 1: 1 hit. G!

Shit, this hasn't updated for me again. I think I'm logging in too many places with too many browsers.
Another set of rules that are a bit crazy - surprise attacks.
Fabbles - Its +Intuition too. So that's 6 dice. I re-rolled, you got 2 hits.
Unfortunately it's not enough to see anything at this time. Jon is too concerned with digging the clumps of dust out of his face to see much beyond his own clawing hands.
Another of the larger bat creatures is next, swooping at the near-blinded Jon. It strikes down at his neck and shoulders. It doesn't possess the claws or speed of the raptor creature, but it looks significantly heavier as it barrels downward with wings pinioned back, an ululating shriek pouring from it like a stuka bombing a ship.
Only Lex actually sees/hears this but he can shout a warning on the off chance Jon can react in time.

Jon can't hear it. He's too busy clawing dust from orifices.

In that case:
Jon opens his mouth to try and say something but ends up nearly coughing up a lung

In that case, I'll give a yell.

Thought I replied to this last night... clearly not!
What do I need to do/roll to see if I manage to hear this?

Fab - initiative roll.
Roman - Firenza is with Jasper, Phlegastus and Aiden in the library, discussing the stones of Al qaum. I will update your part more thoroughly once I've got the combat out the way. It's slow because the surprise fighting is utter wank to work out.

Initiative (9): 5, 2, 1, 2, 5, 3, 1, 6, 4: 3 hits.
Remarkably average

Right, you don't react quite fast enough to the shout and the beastie smashes into your head and shoulders whilst you flail about.
It crashes into you with its claws and bulk, dealing 11 damage.
Roll your body + impact armour value to resist it.
