Surveillance

Directed by Jennifer Lynch, daughter of David. Film about two FBI agents sent in to investigate a spate of brutal killings across the country. They arrive at a small town police station where three people - a shady cop, a junkie woman, and an 8 year old girl - have just survived an encounter with the killers.

All 3 have contrasting stories, and the agents must unravel the truth to find out who knows what.

Cracking film, I really enjoyed it.

Fucking Bruges? Great acting and dialogue, focuses mainly on two hitmen and their imposed safehouse in Bruges.
Saw jock watching this at ProfLAN and had to have a gander myself. Good film.

Don't watch many Ben Stiller films, but seeing as this is his most popular character, figured I ought to. Glad I did.

Not a classic film by any means, but a good comedy.

I saw In Bruges while I was in Kuwait. Very, very funny. The two characters and their interactions would be funny in any setting, I quickly decided.

I have to admit I never watched a Stiller film before Zoolander, since I assumed they would all be immature and stupid, and while some of the films he plays in are (such as something about mary, meet the parents), I really enjoy the frat pack ones.

I lolled at the bit in the petrol station, but thought the rest of it was the same joke over and over. imdb tells me the only other films of his I've watched are Mystery Men and The Cable Guy and I can't say he stood out in those.

I loved There's Something About Mary - the bit in the police station regarding the hitchhiker make me choke on my popcorn when I saw it in the cinema.

The Taking of Pelham 123

Kind of a cross between DieHard3 and Swordfish, but with less action.
Good acting by the main leads, Washington & Travolta, but in their pre-defined and comfortable roles: "Clever but bad boy" Travolta takes a train... "Ordinary Guy in an extraordinary situation" Washington has to stop him...
The storyline is predictable and gets boring before half-way, there isnt much else to say really.

Death at a Funeral

Directed by Frank Oz with a mostly British cast. Quite a traditional British comedy farce with undertones of Ealing comedy, it's about the events surrounding a funeral and stuff.

Funnily enough the two stand out performances for me were from the two lesser known stars. Alan Tudyk (Wash from Firefly fame) adopts a very convincing English accent, and Andy Nyman (played the producer in Charlie Brooker's Dead Set) is brilliant.

Worth a watch

District 9

Aliens are stuck in South Africa in a shantytown slum. Afrikaner is evicting them when things go wrong. Chaos ensues. Visually District 9 is brilliant. The aesthetic of the alien slum is spot on what a rotten 20-odd year old slum should be, and contrasts well with the clean, more stoic Johannesburg. The actors all put in a good performances and the CG aliens are definitely well realized. There is quite a bit of shakey-cam going on, so if you hate that be warned. There are lots of great shot compositions that Blomkamp uses that make it feel like you're there experiencing the action. The action is pretty fucking awesome to boot. If you're looking for a shooty/explodey movie without too much thinking, District 9 is your ticket.

Watched this yesterday afternoon, thoroughly enjoyed it, but the first and last chapters are without a doubt the best. Dark, funny, stylish - Tarantino's hallmarks!

Was pretty good, shame his accent went scouse(ish) half the time when he shouted, saarth efrikhan when he spoke was bad enough.

Death sentence (2007)

I think I've seen it reviewed before, but since the search function doesn't work I'll just pretend it isn't.

Basically it's a mix of taxi driver and death wish anno modern times.
Nothing special but some gore and fun with a double barrelled shotgun.
Oh, and Kevin Bacon. Angry Kevin Bacon.

The Last House on the Left (2009) - (Remake of Wes Craven's 1972)
Just aweful and it was produced by Wes Craven. It was very basic and pathetic.

I'd have to believe that the original one he wrote/directed had to be way better than this one. Has anyone seen the 1972 one?

I have a three-disc uncut edition I bougth recently, but I haven't watched it in "modern vision" yet. It was much talked-about and praised at the time.

I know its been out a while, but i only just watched it. Worthed noting here i thought.

The Boat That Rocked (2009)

A really decent feel good comedy. The characters are strong and well played, the film is nicely shot with loads of great 60s scenes, and it has a good storyline that although doesnt go that far, it does keep things moving the entire way through. Also of course, the soundtrack is great.

9/10
