Well, I can do a heal

Roll(1d20)+5:
19,+5
Total:24

But, A - it isn't my go yet and B - I'm not sure if I should wait until after combat - how long has he got? Not sure how this works.

He loses 1hp every time his turn comes during initiative, if he fails the stabilisation roll.
So, 8 more rounds of actions. You can dash over and do that during your turn, though, and he'll stop losing hit points immediately.

So it's my turn then.

I cast Summon Monster I and summon a Celestial Giant Fire Beetle (I found that somewhere, sounds cool enough for me) inside that room thingy the enemies are in.

Nice choice!

The fabric of the material plane warps and snaps with a loud crack, a shining four foot long white beetle materialises and drops to the floor where you cast the spell, hissing and gnashing its massive pincers. The glowing golden markings that run along its shell light up part of the corridor you're still standing in.

Seeing as you're level 1 the monster lasts for 1 round before phasing away, so there's not really any need to roll for its health (usually a 1d8). It can also use Smite Evil to add an extra 1 damage (number of hit dice it has) to any of the nasties in the shrine.

It attacks with a 1d20+1, and does damage with 2d4(+1 for smite)

The beetle acts on your turn, who are you making it attack?

Let's see. I believe the goblin is in for some serious asskicking.

Attack the goblin that's macing Forenrond!
Roll(1d20)+1:
16,+1
Total:17

Damage with smite!
Roll(2d4)+1:
4,4,+1
Total:9
JACKPOT!

Also, spot check was a counteraction for the hidden creature's hide, right?
I wonder what could it be?

Unfortunately I'm in a conference hall on my kindle at the moment, so I can't check my sheets, but I think your angry bug has bitten him in two

Good job, and yes the spot check was for the mystery guest.
Thor is up. You doing your heals?

Yep, I'll make Pants all better. Well, not dead hopefully.

Right, well your 24 is ample to stop Forenrond from bleeding to death, so as soon as someone helps him back to positive health he can start making actions again. I'll check my sheets when I get back to the office.

Right, yes. That goblin snapped in half like a twig at the might of your celestial summon's bite.

Orc takes his turn now, and he's angry. That darn dirty rogue popped an arrow in his ass!
He waddles forward a few paces and tosses his throwing axe across the room.
Orc wrote:TASTE MY AXE!
Fortunately the arrow tip lodged in his poop chute causes him to stagger forward and fluff the shot, sending the rusty, bloody cleaver to the floor with an echoing clang.

Unfortunately the goblins all of you overlooked down the east corridor spring out from the shadows and both toss their javelins.

The first falls short and skids across the dry rubble, but the other hits Orovan in the back, doing 3 damage.

That beetle is the most awesome thing I haven't seen.

Incidentally, starting on -1 I have 9 10% chances to stabilise, so it's not too bad. Quite a nice system really, I'm glad Grimmie gave us the chance to playtest it. I'm still glad FJ saved me the chance of failing though.

so is there now a goblin and an orc in that room and 2 more goblins behind us?

Posted: November 17th, 2010, 17:58
by Grimmie
Yeah, really it would take your entire party nine goes each to neglect rolling a heal check, so as long as someone touches your special place at some point during the battle, you're A-OK. It might be a bit of a brutal introduction to Unconscious and Dying rules, but at least you're not going to be thrown off by it next time.

Bits, yeah. That's correct :)
Orovan and Glibberig are nearest the east corridor, still standing in the foyer.
The rest of your party are staring down the Orc in the shrine, to the west.

So, is it Bit's go then we all roll Initiative again?

Posted: November 17th, 2010, 20:43
by Grimmie
Nope, we keep that initiative order for the whole encounter :)
An encounter is over when all of one side is dead, or incapacitated, or scarper, etc.

Orovan lets out a bloody howl of rage and runs towards the goblin that stuck a javelin in his back and attempts to ram his spear through its face

Ooh, a natural 20 on an attack roll.

Thanks to your bonuses you manage to score a CRITICAL HIT. Well done, you.
Critical Hits - DnD Wiki

You huff and puff, and skewer the goblin's face on your short spear.
The goblin decides he doesn't like that, and dies.

Glibberig, yer' up!

Looks like my music...

*puts on smoked lensed reading spectacles*

...hit the spot.

Aaaaw yeah!

Didn't realise Initiative rolls lasted all that time, but considering my initial roll that is awesome news.

In that case, I'd better see to the gobbos gathering behind us. Dropping my instrument, I shall attempt to loose an arrow into one of them (let's say the one on the left).

Attack roll (1d20): 10,+2, = 12, plus 1 from Bardic Music, +1 from size bonus, +1 from racial vs goblinoids = 15

Damage roll (1d6): 5 + 1 from BM = 6

I think I've done that right.

by Grimmie
You did that right!

Like a highly skilled singer-songwriter, you whip round and pop an arrow in the other Goblin's face before he's even had a chance to grab his mace. He too falls down in a gurgling green heap.

Sole Shrine Goblin next. He grabs his mace and swings it at Thor's face, misses entirely, and runs off whimpering to the big bad Orc at the end of the shrine.

Nobody's healed Forenrond yet, so we're back on Thoroar.

I point at the orc with a devil's horn gesture, and as I begin concentrating, a blue lightning sparks between my index and little finger.
Thoroar wrote:Hey, you green bastard! How'd you like a first hand taste of my magic missiles?
Finally, the lightning turns bright pink and takes the shape of a rocket as if it was attached to my lower wrist and launches brilliantly at the Orc doing...

Damage:

...not quite as much damage as it could have.
