Yay dungeons! narf after getting to 80 and facing the grind, my interest has cooled somewhat, but I'd definitely be up for some 5punky dungeoning.

I'm predicting a similar thing. Hit 80 and potter about a bit, play around with some alts, and make an effort for dungeons. Since we're not paying a sub it doesn't really matter if we only play it once a week or just dip in for the odd dungeon, I'm happy with that. Also, WvW might keep me going for quite a while.

Hitting 80 isn't helped by the god awful end areas. I've said it before, but man do I hate Orr.

Valuable input from the Berk monster there.

I'm finding a certain risk to levelling through crafting and other means, in that your gear doesn't keep up with you and so you end up underpowered for your equivalent level areas. It's not a big problem for me, but it is sometimes noticeable, particularly when up against veteran mobs. Of course you can always drop to a lower level area, and the auto-nerf will make it moderately challenging and (I think) still grant you XP, but that will take training your inner MMO player to accept that you have the option of playing low level areas for more than just achievements.

I actually levelled quite a lot on lower areas, just because they were prettier or more fun. You level a little slower, but that's sort of made up for by the fact you can level 3 times in quick succession just doing crafting. It's nice that you're not completely restricted to your actual level.
Btw, we dunky 5punkeoning today? If so be sure to give me a poke on Steam, I'll no doubt be poking aliens.

Me too! But yes, I'd like to do some dungeoneering this weekend.

Orr, yes, fucking hate it. I think this is a lot to do with the fact that EVERYTHING wants to eat your face and that respawns are quick (whereas lower level areas some mobs are happy to ignore you) there is another area thats been burned by the Flame Legion that is also a bit nob.
Grind only matters if you want stuff that looks a particular way, otherwise crafted gear has the same stats.
If you level a bit through crafting then maybe take something that is useful to your class? my ranger has leatherworking and huntsman, provides armour and weapons - or provide gear from alts.
There is talk of them implementing a "guesting" system where a friend can invite you over to their server to take part in dungeoning or whatever - hopefully I can hop over and take part in some 5punkgeoning.

The Hallowe'en event is happening, and I have to admit I have no clue what is going on. However, there are probably unique achievements and things for it if you're a completionist.

This, and carving all those pumpkins is a pain too, thankfully that clock tower doesn't count to the overall achievement

I managed it in the end, but only once the Norns and Charrs had fucked off.

It all seems very grindy to me. Kill 150 halloween gribblies, carve 150 pumpkins, open 100 bags. The PvP cultist event seems weighted towards you having to play lots because only one person ever seems to win, the clock tower puzzle makes you wait after you (frequently) fall off. For someone who has limited time to play it seems like the events are all designed for people who spend all day doing nothing but, which is quite a contrast to the rest of the game. Nontheless, away I will grind because it's there and it won't be forever.

I don't think the PvP stuff counts towards the achievements. I don't like the Lunatic Asylum one - it's hugely weighted against the villagers. Once myself and 5 other villagers got tooled up with hammers and battered the chuff out of an inquisition player. He died and we cheered. Then he stood back up in the same spot and killed us off one by one. I don't get it.
The "capture the pumpkin" one is quite enjoyable. Fortunately WvW had prepared me in the art of running away, so I ended up with a good score.
Apparently on the clock tower there are alternative routes - they don't lead you to the end but they do lead you to other treasure. Can't say I'll be attempting that myself. I didn't find the wait overly annoying, but then again I think the people doing it at the same time were just as bad so it reset fairly quickly.
Mad King fight is quite disappointing.

It is a bit grindy, I love the game but I find myself annoyed by the flimsyness of it all - that said, WarCrack was just as bad for this kind of thing, at least they are laying it bare and saying you will have to kill 150 gribblies and carve 150 pumpkins.
The Mad King mini dungeon was a bit of a letdown, the hardest part of the fight was the damn jumping inbetween levels, but again if I measure it up against the WoW headless horseman it comes up smelling of roses. Dissapointed that the start of the event (where he tells you to cower, dance, salute, etc) doesn't seem to work - no matter what happens you end up getting attacked.
The best way to get the halloween gribblies and pumpkins achievements with the least gind is to port to the labyrinth and join a zerg running around, lots of kills and frequent pumpkins - you will probably get 1 or 2 events done toward that other achievement too, and about 1s per min in cash.

Nifty guide for the Halloween stuff here:

There's also a shitload of other useful stuff on that site. It's jolly good.
I've only bothered with a few bits of it myself - it hasn't really grabbed me like events in other mmongs have. I'm still enjoying the game and finding plenty to do, but this event is a bit of a fail IMO. That said, the decorations look fantastic.

Hah! I finally managed to do the Clock Tower at about 11:00 last night. The first bit is by far the hardest. I got a couple of other achievements, but I had nowhere near enough time to get any of the grindy titles. I kind of enjoyed the MOBA-like PvP game though.
