I think that building is great, but I've only seen photos of it. Is it still used? I don't see any cars.

Also I came across this photo of an enormous concrete building. Anyone any idea what it is?

I'm surprised that the health and safety executive haven't banned that kind of lift, there must have been some form of gruesome accident involving a drunk/student and one of those before now!

Two I know of are the one in Leicester Uni, and one in an office building in the Derby Rolls Royce site. True, they are broken down more often than they are working, but they still get some use.

Its quite entertaining to see buisnessmen turn up at office, stand in the lobby staring in horror at the thing, then head to the stairs. Wimps, the lot of them.

Weird, I'm sure I stayed in that building (the Newcastle one) in 1989-ish and they had normal lifts. I guess I assumed they'd banned them everywhere.

Chances of students attempting the up-and-over are clearly 100%, though - what were they thinking?

yes they still use it....unfortunately although its in a pretty awful part of gateshead (trampy and full of chavs), therfore full of stolen and burnt out Vauxhall Novas. underneath that car park is: wilkinsons, ladbrokes and iceland and farm foods (like netto but possibly even worse) which explains it.

tesco (being the evil bunch of bastards that they are) say that they arent going to knock it down unless gateshead council grant them permission to make their store into a massive tesco extra, although from what ive heard, the grant has been passed so im not too sure whats happening with it

I can personally vouch for the up and over now being perfectly safe, if fucking unnerving the first time around.

That and the leicester one once had a flood in the basement that meant if you went down and under, you were briefly dipped into ankle deep and rather mingy water.
