RAM issues

If you touch your software enough does it become hardware?

I didn't say it was an x58 issue you're right. But that doesn't have any bearing on the fact I aleady presented the correct solution.
HereComesPete wrote:*snip* I would hazard the issue is it's trying to run all the ram at high speed and it can't do it. You'll probably need to drop the MHz in the bios *snip*
See, that's me I'm quoting, from further up the thread.

My point is, lowering the speed is just a general RAM troubleshooting step, not necessarily the final answer on the issue. In this case, it is, but there is a specific reason why it is the final answer, not just a troubleshooting step to get it to boot.

Ladies, ladies - have a piece of cheese.
deject wrote:Also, is there a reason you can't use Gigabyte's @BIOS utility to do it from Windows?
Yes - I'd never heard of it. However, I've now looked into it and run a BIOS update...

IT WORKS!

Slight hiccup is that the fan on the roof of my case has stopped working. I could have nudged a connection, but then again it has been sounding like an old Skoda recently so maybe it was already on its way out. I'll prod around in there again tomorrow as I really can't be arsed now (I've set my CPU fan slightly higher to compensate).

Cheers for the help all (though I'm still none the wiser about channels).

Edit: fan working - the cable from the CPU fan had got wedged in it. As a bonus it's also much quieter than it has been for ages.

A clean up of wires inside the case is often a good way to reduce noise unless it's obviously the sound of bearings on a fan on the way out. Loose wires always seem to find their way into fans and act like playing cards clothes-pegged onto a bicycle wheel.

If you want horrific noise and shaking from a fan just snap one of the blades off. I managed to do this to the 240mm fan n the top of my case and it kept walking around the desk. Took some fiddly supergluing to repair.
