There are many reasons why this won't take off, most of which have been mentioned above.

But if you want an example in regards to the affect of simple piracy to a console, surely you don't need to look further than the Amiga?

I'm starting to become as wary of the Ouya bashing bandwagon as I am the Ouya itself. They might not be evil, perhaps just naive and/or incredibly ambitious. And I don't trust these industry veterans saying this is impossible because XboxStation 3 costs $XX,000,000 to bring to market. There may be other ways to do it.

The OpenPandora proves that independent, hackable devices can be sold, but definitely not for $99USD. The Pandora, consisting of a 1ghz processor and 512Mb of ram will currently cost you €370 or thereabouts. So, these things aren't cheap...
