Don't worry, if I do manage to get one I will wank on about it, quite furiously. Unfortunately the torrent client is a bit limited at the moment, no throttling or scheduler, but I they're developing it and it's open to user hacking as well.

It works out at something like £8pcm which is nothing really.

Best thing about usenet is you can download at 200kb/s and still play on-line games with a ping less than 50ms. And I can download video faster than I can watch it - something only true with the post popular of torrents, and then only sometimes.

It is also more legal, as you are not sharing illegal wares with anyone. And anonymous (well no logs kept so nobody knows what you are downloading exactly).

Though I do agree the cost is the only downside.

I'm tempted to give it a go again just for the hell of it. Is there a decent free client? Previously I've been recommended a client that has a really good search feature that utilises online resources so hard to steal.

Personally I use http://www.newzbin.com http://www.bunnyhug.net/nomp/ and http://www.newsdemon.com/ it seems the best combination (despite adding a whole £12/year to your costs)

I use NewzBin, NewzLeecher, and NewsHosting

Newshosting is $14.95 /pcm for unlimited downloads/bandwidth. With the current weakness of the dollar this works out in our favour.

I mostly just torment. If it's running slow (which it usually does), I just don't fret about it and leave it running when I'm asleep and such.

If you have a 900w PSU as opposed to a 600w PSU, but everythign else is the same, do you only use as much power as you need, or would the 900w use more regardless.

I think I remember someone talking about this recently but can't remember the outcome (Fear I think)

you only use as much as your machine needs (depending on efficiency)

Yep, only uses as much as it needs, depending on efficiency.

One thing I love about having a laptop: 65W power supply.

1x desktop and 1x laptop on if I am awake.
1x UPS, various comms gear 24/7

Prob not, I used a plug-in thingy to work it out just last week - so that's actual cost (of my main box).

It's based on 17p per kWh, so if those 900W PSUs were being fully utilised (which as people have noted, they usually aren't) your standard 168-hour week would cost an alarming £25. (£110 a month, £1300 a year)

Interesting as a comparison to newsgroup access costs, assuming that your pipe is capable of maintaining a higher transfer rate than you typically get from torments, and that (if you have the disk space) you wouldn't just download even more stuff 24/7 anyway. (Also assuming you're the one who pays the electricity bill)

Even with my slow connection, which wouldn't benefit, and that I have quite a lot of disk compared to what most people have quoted in the system specs thread - I can fill my disks in about a month from normal tormenting, with enough material to provide probably three months of viewing, although I probably only get around to viewing a quarter of it.

I've got an anchient (early ATX) 350W PSU as the moment, but I am buying a more "phat" 600W Thermaltake for when i get one of these new 8800GTS 320MB cards.
