Toast, poke me if you need a PHP Padawan for your PHP Jedi-ing.
spoodie wrote:- [media] tag isn't implemented. (Stoat, Presumably we can't use the BBCode editor for this as it does magic depending on the video source?)
In short, it's non-standard BBCode extension that uses a phpBB2 module, hence we cannot use it yet.

I was going to put "we've rolled out the new forum", AS A TEAM!!1 But I thought that'd be taking well deserved credit from Stoat. He was stoating away for hours last night.

He's busy right now, turns out he's a code monkey, so we've sent him round to Stoat's and ordered a truck full of bananas.

What's going on?!

And why are there bears with us?!

Also, the shiny hidden room +10 is visible when you're not logged in. Not that we use it for much but it does have conversations about using ninjas to steal the crown jewels and so forth.

I've blanked the front page for now, so it doesn't briefly show the message before redirecting to the forum.

Hello, bummers! Sorry I couldn't be with you yesterday. I managed to upload the new board before my laptop went cold-turkey on its electricity addiction.
Shiny new laptop arrived this morning, so I have to get that set up before I can get started on fixing things up.

I'm afraid HTML support isn't going to be implemented (here's why). However, phpbb3 handles urls better than previously and if there's anything you feel is missing we'll see what can be done.

I promise not to install Minecraft until at least Saturday morning. Even just to see how well it runs.

So what you're saying is we won't have HTML because it cannot be parsed with regexp? :P

It doesn't provide much of an explanation to me, I don't understand. :?

The article is pretty clear to me. What isn't is how it explains the lack of HTML.

That "whoosh" noise you can all hear is the point rapidly passing Bali by.

html is pretty unnecessary I think. the replacement bbcodes provide the expected functionality that anyone [i]should[/i] need on a forum, so the inclusion of html seems like just redundancy to me. Plus, not using html at least protects from stupid bots that aren't aware of bbcode. I guess it would make the news reader need a bit of coding to translate the html into bbcode, but replacing <a> and <img> tags with [url] and [img] tags isn't a big transition to make and as long as we have all the tags that we really need then I don't see what the big deal is.

It's really not a big deal, but I think in html, rather than bb code, I'm sure all the old b3tans do too.

This :above:

I tended to use HTML, but I am old school, or just old..

The only reason I used HTML in the old forum was because BBcode couldn't handle some characters in the URLs I was using. Links to content in spoodie.com/gallery for instance. If whatever reason it's best not to use HTML I'm sure we can all adjust and fix any problems we find.

Which is fair, but what tags do we really use besides links, image, and video embeds? Especially considering the handy buttons above that let you tag stuff automatically, it really doesn't seem like that big of a deal. Also, I don't know how many of you know about this but if you highlight text you've already typed and click one of the buttons it will put the tags around the highlighted text for you, so if you don't want to bother memorizing tags or if you forget to open the tags with the button before you finished typing, it's easy to come back over and put the tags in.

Now not being able to parse characters seems like a problem with phpbb just not being capable, and I'm sure there is a way to make it work but I can see that being a valid case for using a more general purpose tool like html.

I expect BBcode will be fine for the majority of stuff.
I use html tags for images tho, especially as you can specify dimensions on images. Can you do that with bbcode?

A) You can, just put in [img width=xxx height=xxx] as the opening tag.

B) Specifying dimensions is wrong, you should just resize the image.
