P-nut, any chance of a few tips for playing SPGs? I can't hit a donkey in the arse with a banjo, while other people seem to be able to lob shells over the map without line of sight and with laser guided accuracy.

You have discovered that pressing shift gives you a birds eye view i take it?

Anhams SPG guide.

start of the round, pan the camera round, and find 2 or 3 large bushes/trees etc. they are your firing points.

NEVER stay in a firing point for more than 1-2 shells, bounce between multiple points. If the enemy arty is awake, they're looking for you/your tracer, and you are not invunerable. Watch for enemy artillery tracer, its a nice feeling when you drop one on that bastard who'se beeing chewing up your team.

Choose your targets, its a waste of ammo shooting at that enemy tank thats only got 5% health, unless theres no one else engaging that tank.

If you've got time, watch the routes the other guys might take, watch out for mysteriously moving trees/walls/doghouses. that means someones just rolled through there.

The green circle around your crosshair in BEV is the likely area of impact. if you're after a fast target, aim ahead of where you think the baddies gonna be. look out for targets on the reverse of ridges/behind buildings etc, cause you probably can't do enough splash damage to hurt them, but you can stop them sticking their nose out.

if a target pops up at close range you're probably buggered, unless you're loaded. if you get the chance, take the closest target first, cause if you're dead, you can't give anymore support.

crew skill makes a massive difference on how the circle expands, and how fast it contracts. if you can afford it, rapid training (right click on the crewman in your garage and pay moneys) is always worth it.

/thats it for now, more as i remember it.

Ah well anhams beat me too it. :shakefist: Not much more I can add really, other than dont sit in the spawn point, I tend to move forward slightly and find a nice patch of trees/bushes to hide in. That way you can cover more of the map and also have a bit of time if the enemy start to capture your flag. Oh and if they start getting close use direct fire, it works a lot better at short range.

Pressing shift! So simple, no mention of it anywhere.

I'm pretty nifty at anti-arty in my BT-2, so hopefully that'll make me a bit more defensive against people doing the same. Not that I plan on being an arty-whore, but it'd be nice to score a few hits with my Bison when I occasionally use it.

the other thing about learning how to be useful with arty, it that you know how to hide away from it. everything that causes you to miss a shot as an arty, remember it. do that next time you go up against arty.

couple of other tips:

doubletap 1/2/3 to switch between ammo types. this will pull the shell you have loaded, and stick in the new type.

tap 1/2/3 to queue up that type of shell AFTER you've fired your gun.

Anti tank shells should be your general purpose round

If youve got no hope of penetrating (you're a light tank, and you find a maus/IS-7 etc) switch to High Explosive, and aim for the tracks/viewport/visible fuel tanks.

Don't bother with the premium shells, if you need them to win, you're in the wrong fight, and should have brought a bigger gun

Also, get the speed limiter remover from your russian light tanks (click one of the right most blank boxes in the garage, and buy it.

Doesn't get expended after the battle, but it will fuck your engine if you use it for long enough. If you're doing it right, you will be dead long before your engine pops). doesnt make you faster, but means you can accelerate/lose less speed when turning, meaning you might actually survive long enough to getto enemy arty!

definatly not doing it right. havent you seen the hordes of light tanks getting popped, before arty is ready to fire in support?

edit, and for the real pros, running so far ahead of their team, thet lose radio contact and cant report targets anyway!

I usually take the far flanks, so while I'm moving fast I don't generally stray too far ahead. Mind you, I don't consider myself a spotter for arty whores, more for the mediums moving up behind me. Even though I said myself that's what lights are for. You'll never get anywhere letting other people kill shit for you.

you do actually.
you get xp and credits for:

being the first to spot an enemy
being the first to report an enemy to at least one member of your team
friendlys damaging a target that only you can see
friendlys killing targets that only you can see

The last two only really make sence for arty, as if anyone else is close enough to take a shot, they can probably see the target anyway

I know, but it's hard to spot enemies before someone else does. I find it doesn't get you as many points as killing tanks.

I've noticed something unusual about the ranking system. It tries to get you in a game with similar experience tanks most of the time. However, since every class of tank has a purpose in the game it will sometimes stick you in a light tank in a big-boys battle with several heavies on each side to act as scout. You'll be completely outclassed, but since there's not many other lights you'll get some good spots in if you can survive long enough, since you'll get a proportion of the points from the kills and the points are relative to value of the target.

A few things on gold. You get 150 free every day you log on. In the game proper you buy it with Real Money (TM), but you can test the premium stuff out in the beta.

You can buy tanks. I bought a Matilda last night (Russian medium tank in the game, British Africa campaign medium in real life), which gave me convenient access to a medium tank. Unfortunately it can't be upgraded, making it fairly slow and not overly powerful. Only worth the money as a showpiece then.

You can buy extra slots for more tanks. Since you'll only really ever be rotating through three tanks realistically (often one or two), and you get five slots, they're not really value for money. Useful to hold onto nostalgia pieces alongside your active tanks (in my case the Matilda and a BT-2 I'm trying to turn into a beast with costly upgrades and elite crew).

You can buy in game cash with it. Useful, as cash generally is.

You can convert 'dead' experience sat in a tech tree with no further upgrades to spend it on into pool experience you can spend anywhere. That's not too expensive and quite useful for the last push to a good upgrade.

You can buy a premium account for a month which ups your cash and experience rewards. It's expensive, but probably the best value.

My Panzer II Luchs is now faster than my BT-2. This makes me sad.
