I think this forum should be renamed to allude to the fact that it is now used as official tech support for all sorts of companies, including the military.

As you can see, I'm now back online. Turns our my router died last night after futurebeef confused it and I put the boot in by jabbing at the reset button. So I'm back on my modem for now. Bah.

Thread revival!

I'd like to see a simple overclocking guide please! GPU overclocking is nice and easy due to ATi Tool and Riva Tuner, and I fancy giving my new CPU a bit of a boost, but have no idea where to start. Been reading a bit on Toms Hardware, but its not quite enough of a Dummy's Guide for my liking. BIOS based-OCing and anything voltage related is beyond my current scope of knowledge.

I have a vague, and possibly incorrect, recollection of something about a Windows-based utility which lets you find a stable speed to overclock to, and then you go in to BIOS and up the appropriate (but currently mysterious) settings to make it a permanent change.

I'm not after uber results here, just a simple starter's guide on how to achieve a basic improvement. I assume that beyond that its just a case of increasing the numbers and adding more cooling.

The tool you are thinking of is ClockGen

Basically, what you wanna do is up the FSB a few clicks (3-5 at a time for a start), wait, Repeat.

Take notes of your speeds (on paper) every time you change them.

Once your machine crashes, reboot and go to the last stable speed. (the one before it crashed)

Leave it at that speed for a while (Orthos is handy as a stress test)

If it's stable (I like orthos to not error for at least an hour, that should be good for most, longer is better) go into the bios and set your stable FSB.

Beyond that, you'll wanna up voltages in the bios (vcore) carefully as that helps stability a little, allowing you to get higher FSBs

Pants, for the router, try entering your BT Broadband address (dogpants@btbroadband.co.uk or whatever) and leave the password field blank. If the router doesnt like blank passwords enter the password 'bt'.

I did, and I also had an argument with a woman in India about my router settings. She was actually more technically knowledgeable than I'd have though, and it turns out my router was shagged. Coincidentally, I only got round to buying a new one this week, and it turns out I ordered one without a built in modem. I'm now waiting my modem (and a surge protected plug thingy, 'cos you can't just order one thing). I fail at buying networky stuff.

Pffft. I did exactly the same during my brief foray into wi-fi. Spent loads on posh Net Gear wi-fi router and card only to find the router was just a router and couldn't be arsed buying a modem. I still have both unused in boxes somewhere.

What happened to the thread with all the 'useful free tools' on it? I'm sure I remember seeing one once (it's where I got stuff like AVG and some reg cleaner thing that I quite liked once). I was looking for it last night and ended up having to poke Dr Berk (which admittedly solved my problem in under 3 minutes, which is pretty impressive given it had taken me about 3 days).

No, that's a new one. I'm sure there was an old on called something similar with a load of 'useful free stuffs'. Can't seem to find it in the old threads - was it edited to this version perhaps?

Edit: it was basically cos there was some good stuff on there that I wanted added to that thread though. A short list of recommended tools perhaps including an even shorter list of what the experts around here consider 'must haves' - e.g. the best free anti-virus, anti-bot, browser, reg cleaner...kinda like a one stop ship for a fresh install.
