I've not been a best man, but I have been a groom and I'm not bad at public speaking. What I told my best man to do was not write down everything you're going to say, just write down headings and choice phrases and make sure you know what you're talking about. That way you'll be talking to the audience as you would someone in the pub, rather than reading from a script where you'll be showing no emotion and if you lose your place it breaks the flow. My best man ignored this advice of course (same advice I gave him at college, which he ignored then too), while I chose to just lose my speech.
:above: this, hard. Reading from a script sounds baaaad, just take notes in.

Also, make sure you speak LOUD! Went to a wedding recently with a muttering Best Man, twas fucking awfull

I have been able to avoid going to any weddings, except one: my sister's. Don't remember much about the best man's speech, and just a bit of a mumbled "I'm rubbish at speeches" from the groom.

Then our Dad steps up with a fistful of notes, describing sister's early years in excruciating starkness, before reciting a litany of former boyfriends.

Heh.

I think you just have to say the groom is a nob and that his bride doesn't know what she's letting herself in for.

My sister is getting married next year and it should be comedy at speech time, as my Dad will be hell bent on embarassing her :) and her fiancee talks a lot and his dad is even worse so it should be hilarious watching anyone try and get a word in edgeways!
