All true. I actually enjoyed getting shipped off to (literally) anywhere in the world on sometimes as little as 12 hours notice. I always knew I was coming back as soon as the work was done, though.

Pffft, half the time the work isn't even there when we get there, and we get stuck for ages once it's finished.

I'd imagine the rejoining option depends a lot on why you left in the first place. If it was the "sick of being messed about/bounced around" thing - will it have changed that much?

Maybe it's just me, but aren't the suggestions of bar and security work a little bit insulting, given the university and Sandhurst education? I'm quite sure they're not meant that way, and I guess there are more...supervisory or administrative tiers in those professions which would command a more appropriate salary, but I think your experience, contacts and security clearance would make you a coveted asset in many sectors and you could name your price.

From your posts here, which is all I can really go on, you always seemed more enthuasistic perhaps not about your actual work, but your responsibilities when in the Army, and seemed maybe a little bored by life outside, the plus side being that you've appeared much more relaxed with it and had more time to post fun stuff.

I'm guessing the fact you've listed rejoining in your poll options hints that you already have that option firmly in mind, but it wouldn't hurt to have a bit of fun and travel first, as others have already suggested.

Very astute FJ. But rejoining the army isn't really an option. That's the easy way out.

GCHQ is a good suggestion, I may well look into that.

Bar work perhaps, but I took the others as having a sense of adventure about them, rather than pigeon holing him.

I did look into joining the security services and GHCQ after uni, but after digging deeper it just sounded an exercise in paperwork (the job, not the application). I filled in the application forms but I'm not sure if I ever sent them. They didn't have any vacancies for double-o agents at that time.

Was my intention. With bar work at manager level so it was ~25k. Not too taxing and not that bad a wage (pfft not that bad, that's double what I'm earning).

As for the security thing I was thinking they meant not the fatties who watch porn in warehouses at night. More the private security firms who provide cover detail to rich people. BG work and site support for construction companies in angry hot places. Very lucrative but more risky than being green.

Aye, bar work be it management or otherwise would never be a long term option for me, but it helps pay the bills in the mean time and gets you out of the house, in a pub. I know nothing of Friz's background, but it's like a stock suggestion of mine, if anybody is unsure what to do in the long term. That's why I did it for a while, but I kinda enjoyed it too.

As an aside, I think people who would be genuinely insulted by a suggestion of bar work probably aren't my kind of people...

as being unemployed myself at the moment being laidoff for the 2nd time in 4years...my first choice is to go for something that is of interest to me(fun)...but then $$ always falls into play...of course, you always want benefits and security to play into it also...but, it my extreme case of "public talking anxiety" = bad interviewing...i tend to have to take what i can get unless I get lucky or have good connections...
