Perhaps i wasn't so clear, the distance won't cause problems for games.
However, you have to remember that the time it takes for the voice traffic to get across the atlantic and back can add 200-300ms onto the total time it takes compared to a uk/eu based server - which can be bad (not to mention the extra routing allowing for more issues)
Yes, i know another 300ms doesn't *seem* like much, but it really adds up
if i say hello, it takes 300ms to get to you (150ms to usa, 150ms back), and another 300ms for me to get your reply.
that's 600ms, not taking processing etc into account.
Certainly that's the case with teamspeak anyway - all traffic goes through the server, there's no peer to peer connections.
/Really fucking geeky.
Anything is pretty likely to sound shit to some level, because there's probably 30 of us, all using different hardware, with gain etc - not to mention the issues of onboard sound (don't get me started)
Also, you have to remember that any changes to stuff means some fucking mug (me) has to talk everyone through getting set up.
As i said above, if you wanna go ahead and order a big enough server for a month and help us all get set up with it - we'll be more than willing to try it out and switch over providing no-one has issues etc. - At which point i'd start paying etc using the donations.

Juuuust so we are clear M,
I wasn't comparing you to a pubic wig. 'Merkin' is a b3ta bastardisation of 'American'. If you ain't a b3tan I doubt you would get the reference

I think TS is fine. I've been in a few Vent servers and they do sound clearer, but I think the sound quality of TS is fine. A few people sound a bit odd at times, but that's probably more to do with their mics and settings and stuff, the added bonus of cheapness, closeness and non-ugliness of teamspeak is also for the win.

TS has served us fine up untill now, and theres no need for change IMO.
And as Berk said, he will need to talk most peolpe through the set-up, which is alot more for berk to do, and I think he does more than enough for us already.

TS does sound shit, no doubt. If you dont believe me, try speaking to someone via something with decent sound quality, like skype. They sound unrecognisable, its so much clearer.
That being said, the only people ive ever had problems understanding are people with a shite mic setup and mumbling bastards (im looking at you, hehulk

). However, I do use headphones, not speakers. That probably helps a lot.

You're missing another important point here, teamspeak is light and uses very little bandwidth, skype is pretty heavy in both respects.
I suspect ventrilo is too - any filtering will hit people's CPUs etc. which is bad, higher bandwidth use will sound better but will eat bandwidth that should be going to gaming.
oh, and if you think TS is bad, try the voip in CS:S

indeed. I didnt really mean to imply that we should use Skype for gaming, that would be a silly plan. I was just using it as an example of how shitty the ts quality is.
To clarify, what I meant was this: Yes, TS sounds shite. But as its (mostly) comprehensable shite, it doesnt seem worth the hassle of finding an alternative.
