Thats actually a relief, maths is a stronger subject for me. Electronics is more of an interest. Woop! This course seems to also include some C and C+ Programming. Which may be similar to yours, but looks quite interesting for me. But alas, I have only done PHP so far, so different too.Dog Pants wrote:
I've and HND and a B.Eng in electronic engineering. Lots of maths, of which at degree level contains only Greek letters, some circuit design, most of which is also maths (with numbers this time though), some programming in my case, although I don't know if that's standard, and some practical work that was actually quite interesting.
If you're good at maths you'll be okay. I'm not and I passed on the strength of my final project and the fact that I charmed the professors when I presented itAs an example, our maths professor filled one side of his whiteboard, flipped it, filled that side, flipped it again and looks baffled as to why there was writing on it. That was all the same formula he was working on.
I take electronics at A-level now. So will probably have a pretty good headstart when it comes to circuit design and stuff for the first few months. Heheh.. all the more time for "Enjoying myself".

I did telecommuncations engineering which included electrical and electronic engineering, telecoms and programming. I much preferred the logic and discrete maths of programming and integrated circuits over the calculus used to describe waveforms in transmission protocols and the movement of electricity through circuits.
I went to Southampton Uni. I'd highly recommend it. Not only did I have a brilliant time there, but it also has one of the best computer science departments in the country.pixie pie wrote:*Tries to understand*

Went and looked at southampton University yesterday, slightly small chances, but any of you guys been there, or got any opinions? Or even better, anybody studied Electronic Engineering and want to share their experiences?
I did history.
Harsh luck on the course choicefriznit wrote:I went to Southampton Uni.
I thought it was a very nice town narf. There's a very good pedestrian high street with the usual shops, plus a few more eclectic ones if you explore around the edges a bit - no, not that sort of....oh nvm
Good cinema complex and some decent clubs if you're into that kinda thing. Shit load of pubs - awesome pub crawls from campus to end of town and back...well, I very rarely made it that far.
There's a big grassy common with a good pub on it (Cow Herds) which is awesome during the summer, or late at night when you want to fire your rocket filled with cylum glowing green shit into space (don't ask).
There's a river and of course the sea - booze cruises highly recommended. Isle of Wight next door for a change of scenery too. It's on the M3/M27 so easy access to rest of world. Airport does cheap flights to Europe.
In fact I enjoyed the town so much that I continued to live there on and off for 5 years after graduating and I'd go back there if I ever got a job nearby. The advantage of the campus layout is that the vast majority of people living near the university are either employees or students - i.e. like minded fools. Apart from the Flowers Estate down from Glen Eyre Hall which is kinda chav central. But Glen itself rocks - I'd highly recommend it.
Hmmm...I figure if you want more info this is best moved to PM or emails. Don't wanna bore everyone to death.

Mine had some telecomms in it, and I did some during my training too. I'd have to agree that I preferred the logic and programming (apart from datacomms, which is the most boring subject I've ever sat through).FatherJack wrote:I did telecommuncations engineering which included electrical and electronic engineering, telecoms and programming. I don't recommend it.
The rocket firing thing was cool. We took one or your common rocket-with-parachute efforts, removed the parachute and filled it with green from a cylume. When it went bang instead of releasing said parachute and floating gently to the ground, it spurted glowy green all over us from a great height. We looked like we'd been 5punked on by a predator from a great height.
Next day we tried it with petrol. It was pretty.
I went with pixiepie and thought it was quite awesome as well. There was mention of free Microsoft software for students. Is this true?friznit wrote:...one of the best computer science departments in the country.
And how brilliant is the Comp Sci bit?
Any body else have recomendations for good Comp. Sci. universities?
Pixie and I are obviously both Lower Sixth, and so looking at the many Unis now
