"People don't like being preached at". Well yes, you're right, so stop it and let people make their own mind up.

I know I try and support all sides of any argument, but to defend the indefensible is a waste of my time! Atheism as a danger? Compared to religions and their obvious damage to society at this time atheism is the safe route (unless it's a fear style militant atheism ). We know it's extremists hijacking perfectly reasonable ideals for their own nefarious ends, but throw enough bombs in the name of allah of drop enough bombs in the name of god and all religion seems a bit shit.

If he offered intelligent argument then I'd accept his ideas, but his reasoning and rebuttal is written on sugar paper in crayon.

I don't like to see an organisation of non-believers, such as atheism. It feels a bit like a religion to me.

This is true, but being a "non-believer" I tend to felcher out this nonsense. Although if I think about it it's quite unnerving that some people do believe it.

Isn't telling people that there isn't a god and saying they shouldn't believe in anything the same thing?
Besides, while it's true that religion is promoted by wankers, it isn't necessarily a bad thing.

The problem is not religion as such, while I'm not inclined to believe in a diety, and think the books are complete fiction, religion isn't too bad, the problem is the people who latch on to it, who don't even once think about anything they're told by their church or question what they read and take everything as a litteral meaning.

Those very same people would, if Atheism became the dominate thought system, wage a war Atheism's name against people who believed in religion purely because they didn't believe the same thing as them (ie, believing there is not a diety).

Those people also wouldn't be able to actually get atheism, they'd believe that there is no god, which is no different from believing there is (well, barring the fact the onus is on people and individuals which can be brought to account, rather than a cloud), and the whole point of atheism is not believing there is no god, it's about knowing there isn't a god as there is no proof to support claims there is.

It was voltaire. And I believe he was correct. As I see it we as a race latch onto certain ideas that suit our notions of the realities we inhabit. The way we interact with these ideas is necessarily different and thi sleads to conflict.

We'll never agree on a subject like this because it affects us all in a profound manner, and we're all fanatics to some extent, my view that everyone should be heard and understood is as rabid a view as any suicide bomber or evangelical preacher.

Heywod broun said that "nobody talks so constantly of god as those who insist there is no god" I think this points to atheism becoming a religious standpoint by it's very denial of the existence of deities.

Whether you agree with that idea or think that the idea has been hijacked by people who are unsure of life but don't want a religion as a self help system is irrelevant imo, peoples realities of any given object/subject be it physical or ephemeral are entirely subjective and that's why clashes over ideas occur.
