You can certainly get on well enough without them, but following on from what DP said:

Auctioneer helps you make more money and could stop you not be ripped off on auction purchases.

Questhelper tells you where to go rather than hunting around. This also ties in with mapping addons to give you an arrow telling you which direction to go in without opening the map.

Although they are not infallible.
