I believe (and I could be wrong) that the papers have massively failed to report what's actually been going on today. There's no real danger of anything happening until the particles collide (Large Hadron Collider).

Today they've just popped one particle in. When that gets up to the correct speed, they pop the second one in (next month by all accounts). When/if these collide, that is when we are all surely doomed.

I could be wrong like, but I've read a bit here and there. Plus people are putting their faith in Daily Mail articles and Radio 1's Newsbeat.

Brian Cox and some other bloke were Newsnight just now. Paxman just shouted at them, as is his style, about whether it's worth the money.

The man from manchester, he say yeeeeessss!

Seriously though, finding out how EVERYTHING is made at the most basic level should mean we can eventually make ANYTHING we want, in any quantity we want.

So yes, if it's a step towards that it's worth it.

Besides, I just watched some program on tele tonight about the Iraq war, apparently it's costing the USA a few billion per month, considering the LHC cost only a few billion in total so far and won't go much above that and is funded by a substantial number of countries, it's pocket change.

Brian Cox is rather eloquent and is a pretty damn good speaker.
