other thing to consider is if you need all those fans.

also, stamped in fan grilles like This make masses of noise, cut them out (replace with wire grills, if you have childs or kittins)

Not sure if its just me but 5 (No wait was it 6..?) fans sounds slightly excessive.. Maybe you could just do without some, or if you're really into it, try underclocking your CPU, so that you can turn down fan speeds.

Or try replacing 2 80mm fans with 1 120mm fan. I have 2 120mm fans (and one 80mm), it keeps they thing nice and smoothly cool. At one point I was thinking about trying to make my computer quiet, But I have discovered if you turn music up loud enough to cover it. Its not so much a problem. So maybe what you want are nicer speakers?

Probably not narf, I could definately stop one of the case fans and maybe the other with no real effect on the temp. I'll have to run a test or two

I've been thinking about this recently; how does the aerodynamics of the sinks and grills that the fans push and pull the air through effect the noise levels? Now I'm getting really obsessive about this.
I'll have a look wire grill replacement, good idea.

BTW: did you get that P180 case?

Way ahead of you there I have 2 x 120mm case fans, 90mm CPU fan, PSU has a 120mm fan. 1 x 120mm case fan was disconnected until yesterday as I know it's not really needed but I am trying out the new setup with it connected. As for drowning out the noise that wont really work, my PC is in the lounge so I want it quiet for whenever we're watching TV, etc. Nice try though

probably worth trying, also, bigger fans are better.

i actually went for the silverstone temjin 01 (which that picture showed) and a dremel

and basically, the more stuf you have in the way of your airflow, the messier (and noisier) the air gets, even to the point of tucking cables out of the way.

P.C's make noise, it's what they do
I understand people buying quieter fans and hard disks, but unless there's someone else in the room trying to get asleep, what issue does it cause?

I have very noisy SCSI drives in my PC, along with very noisy fans (especially on startup), but once I close the door to the spare room, nobody else can hear the PC, and it stops nobody from sleeping.

I mean "how quiet" do you actually need a PC to be? Surely background noise such as traffic, central heating and other ambient stuff make just as much noise, but you block them out?

I'm not being funny, I just find it all a bit bonkers, and a waste of money to be honest.

I think it's that he's got it in the same room as the TV that other people want to watch while still being able to talk/nag you.

I had this problem and moved the PC upstairs. She only found something else to complain about instead.

Granted it's not that important, but as my PC is in the same room as the main TV, surrond sound, etc it can ruin the atmosphere of a quiet bit in a horror film when you have loud "HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM" constantly in the background. And to start with it was very noisy and quite annoying if we were watching any TV while it was on. Now it's a personal mission acquire uber-quietness and a hobbie ...

having had machines that run silently (it took a lot of work and watercooling)

i can honestly say that the noise and vibration does make a lot of difference when you're using the computer, and if people have to hear it (like in the room below your computer) it makes them less likely to murder you.


don't get me wrong, i don't care too much about noise, but silence is a nice thing, especially when your bed shares the same room as the computer (and your hifi, xbox, phone, etc.etc.)
