The arcade is getting a bit silly, no?

so far in the last few days i've seen a handful of people sign up just for the arcade, people with no other reason or desire to be here it seems.

Personally, i say make the arcade free to active members who give something to the community. and make the other fuckers pay, say a fiver to access the arcade.

remember that

1) the arcade costs bandwidth, lots of i expect.
2) people would be paying to cover the bandwidth the arcade uses, not the games within.
3) you might kick some of them into being community members, not just members on the site.

Psh, that's a bit harsh.
Plus wouldn't we be doing an eBaums by charging people for other authors content?

As these games are available free elsewhere I don't think enough people would be willing to pay to make it worthwhile

What's the arcade? Is that where you go shopping? I've never been in there.

exactly my point. :)

i think the arcade is great for giving active members something to do, but i can see it getting to a point where there's a lot of people just signing up for the arcade and never even posting.

I can see what you are getting at, berk. However, 2 points:

1) I am suspicious as to whether the drain the arcade has on the bandwidth has any actual monitary effect. Would we be getting away with a smaller bandwidth bracket from the hosting people if the arcade was not there? Cos if not, then all you will actually achieve is making a bunch of people *not* come to use the arcade, as I doubt anyone will be arsed to pay money for something they can get free elsewhere. This in turn will mean that they are not introducing others to the arcade, others who could potentially then turn into active members.

2)How exactly would you define "active"? If its just a case of post counts, then you are simply encouraging people to post large amounts of innane irrelivances. If its based on some undefined quality of the members input to 5punk, it will need individual attention. Either way, you would be causing a lot more work for Mods, for no great reason.

Of course, if the non-posting memebers who use the arcade are doubling our hosting fees, then it all becomes a different matter. Statistics needed, methinks!

i expect it's not raising the hosting fees as such, though, it's worth looking at along with how legit the arcade is (or not)

active member generally means that they actually post now and then, maybe even just look at the forums, can be defined in many ways.

it's certainly more of a future suggestion than a right now one either way.

Doesnt sound like a very happy 5punky suggestion.
It certainly goes against the "Kickaround in the park" ethos.

maybe so,

do you often have a bunch of girls playing with dolls and having a picnic, sitting in the middle of a kickaround on the park?

pah.

if i wanted people to donate that much, i'd just turn bukkake off and say i was skint. :)

i was thinking more as a way to cover some of WEY's hosting costs and such.

Going by a recent newsletter from Dreamhost this site has quadzillion megs of bandwidth per month* so I don't think that need be a concern. And I'm sure WEY has got his eye on the stats.

BTW: My previous comment about not playing on the Arcade was not intended to belittle the Arcade at all, just not my cup-of-tea and not why I'm here.

to sum my feelings up.

find a member who only came for the arcade, then joined in elsewhere.

find someone who was introduced by an arcade only user and joined in on the forum.

also, come up with some suggestions yourselves.

Has it happened? no.
Could it happen? possibly.

Im not saying its a totally worthless suggestion, just that we certainly dont need to worry about it untill bandwidth becomes a problem. Which I doubt it is at the moment.

*points at the huge percentage of this site that has come about due to various people suggestions*
