The manual says: Auroras cannot be shot down upon entry, only after delivering their payload, or when guarding an area. If you can find another way to take them down before they've fired, then well done.

It lies. All that happens is they are very, very speedy. This makes it impossible to shoot em down with rockets, and miniguns tend to only get a couple of hits in before they are out of range/dropping teh bomb.
If youve got a couple hundred guys with mini-guns, thats a couple of hundred couple of hits. Deadified.
