Friz, I believe you maybe in error and doing yourself an injustice there. Unless I am much mistaken, Portal is not part of the HL series, so there is no "in sequence" and no harm in playing it. And to add to that it's good enough to poke your eyes out and it's short (so the Zero Punctuation guy says).

Once I'd figured out how to not keep killing myself slowly with radioactive implants it became more fun - so much so that I even went back to a vastly earlier save just to get the item for the "correct" ending. I hated it in parts at first, but when I started it again (incompatible savegames FTL) and got the armour hidden in the start village it was much better. I was a frequent visitor of the loading screen, though.
I think most of the complaints people make about S.T.A.L.K.E.R. are caused because people are confused by the bullet physics. Once you adjust to the way the bullets drop and their speed the game becomes much easier. The weight limit is quite brutal, especially if you're not good at conserving ammo, and when I just want to have fun I use a weight mod too. You won't need to carry much ammo if you're using the same ammo as your enemies, and if you're good at getting headshots. Of course, with the weight mods, I end up carrying 2 or 3 different rifles with about 1000 rounds of ammo each because I like to spray when necessary.

For this reason I prefer ones like Dark Crusade and Supreme Commander where you get to use the ultimate weapons simply by building up and playing a map for long enough - rather than progressing further into the game. They are also the #1 genre for me to come back to and carry on where I left off after a long time.
Actually, I've never ever completed a RTS game's single player campaign. So I guess I should add C&C and Red Alert to the list of games I started but didn't finish. I much prefer RTS games in multiplayer.

In the words of a wise man called Nike..
Just do it!
portal is part of the HL world, but you really don't need to know anything about any of the HL games for it to be fucking awesome.
Might have to give it a go then. I believe I have a steam account.
The only mod/cheat I have for STALKER is the kit repair one. It's mighty useful, and means you can carry on using your cool gun when you finally found it. Oddly, the bullet physics are very similar to ArmA. Maybe that's why I prefer these to normal FPS type games that do laser physics... meh.

I was using that one, but it made the game crash when I got to Lake Yantar. Every time I tried to talk to the scientist in the bunker it CTD'd.
There are plenty of games I've started but never finished, and others that I've played loads.
I know people will hate me for this, but I still haven't completed Psychonauts or Vampires Masquerade. Had to reformat partway through each and although I kept the save games, I never got round to reinstalling them. They're on my "to do" list, and Jade Empire is another one that suffered the same fate.
Oblivion, I completed the main quest and sunk about 60 hours into it, but I really don't feel like I've "completed" it properly, since I've not really done any of the side quests and only did 2 of the guilds. Morrowind by comparison stole far far more of my time, and I completed everything except the main quest.
GTA:SA was the first GTA game that I feel I played through properly, and I pretty much completed the whole thing twice. Got bored the second time round at the part where you had to seduce women in the Las Vegas type bit in order to infiltrate a casino.
Stalker, Fear and Bioshock were all completed, but they were before I started my new job, and I’ve since found that most of my gaming time is taken up playing multiplayer games with you guys. That’s why I’ve still not completed Ep2 yet. It was different as a student when I had time for 20-30 hours a week of beef, plus plenty of other games, but these days it’s rare for me to get 10 hours a week total gaming, including the Wii. This is one of the reasons why it’s highly unlikely that many games will get replayed for me now, unless there is a serious lull in new releases.
Then there are the other games that I just never got into. Prey, Doom 3 and Far Cry all fall into this group, and most of the more recent RTS games too. Having loved C&C when I was younger, I almost feel obliged to like stuff like Supreme Commander etc, but they just totally fail to do it for me now. A game that can take several hours for a single round just doesn’t do it for me now, especially when I don’t tend to have several consecutive hours available.
Lateralus: I haven't finished Vampire Masquerade either.
SPOILERS?
I get to that bit in London where characters go missing and it just annoys me. Seems I spent so much time getting my character all pretty and awesome and RAWR ... then they put him in a leather jacket and he looks like Tom Cruise with a heavy metal hair cut.
I don't like Tom Cruise :/
Can anyone tell me what happens in the end? ;p I can't be bothered finishing it.

I'd tell you, but my save corrupted on the last level, so it went NYENYE, never to be seen again
