short answer: hit it in the face with memtest

long answer: bit of googling says that error is usually related to memory or paging file issues.

As memory is easier to diagnose, start there by running memtest on call your sticks of ram, if you get errors, try one at a time to work out which sticks are dead.

oh, and don't worry, this is forum is here for everyone's puter issues, so post as much as you need to.

if my memory (no pun intended) serves me correctly, memtest needs to be run from a floppy, and my floppy drive is dead.

can it be run from a cd?

Fix'd.

Also, I've seen conflicting reports about the cause of an error like the one described. Try running chkdsk as well.

:above: but I figured get the memory out of the way first, as that's less work for me :)

better fix'd.

It would have been far easier to just write something of mediocre wit here, but I foolishly decided to spend an age doing :above: instead, I'm a cupcake just for doing that.

ok i didn't think to ask what i'm actually looking for in memtest.

i'm guessing it's simply a matter of no errors = good, but then it's something else that needs looking at

and any errors at all = bad, replace ram time
