I might end up asking for advice on my entire system, save my Hard Drive, which has lots of stuff on it I don't want to lose (Art, stories, games, pr0n etc) by starting over. I'm not entirely sure what my motherboard is and what it can support - Any ideas on how I can find out?

My processor is a AMD Athlon XP 2000+ MMX 1.7Ghz.
I have 768MB of RAM (No buggering idea what kind..)

Please.. Help a Grimmie.

LMFAO!

anyway, open the case and look around for something that looks like a model number. once you find it, google it.

model number examples:

Asus P5ND2-SLI
Gigabyte GA-7VT600P
Abit IC7-G MAX II
ASRock K7VT4A PRO

VIA KT400-8235

And do not laugh at my processor, the little darlin' has served me well for a good few years. HalfLife 2 works like a beauty still. It's still considered a 2Gig Processor :(

OK, the VIA KT400 is an Athlon chipset. This means that your motherboard can handle Athlon XP's and Sempron's (of the socket A variety) that run on a 333MHz FSB. A quick look at Newegg shows that you can get a Barton at 3000+ or 2167MHz. Also, you should be able to support 1GB RAM chips, but it only supports up to DDR333.

Motherboard able to take Athlon processors up to 3000+ and take quite a lot of good RAM. Near-term upgrade prospects are healthy.

I've slapped in RAM before, but I don't really need any more than I have already, right? As for a processor, I think we tried that one before and almost failed horribly. Would anyone suggest a DIY Processor installation, or should I get something like that done by a clevar-person-with-toolz-and-5k1llz?

a) putting the CPU in the socket isn't hard, just flip up the lever and drop in the nex one. NEVER push it in, it should just drop in. The scary part about installing Athlon XP's is installing the heatsink and fan. With that just take your time and only use as much horse as you need. If possible, it would be a good idea to have someone watch you the first time so you won't crack the CPU core.

b) when you're shopping:

Ordered the Raedon X700 128Mb Graphics card to replace my currently buggered one which today showed huge graphical glitches on Dawn Of War. Coupled with freezing, some of the textures used for the game MENU cocksed up to make the whole screen blue and white and.. All sorts.

Also, my monitor was today torn apart and fuze examined.
Fuze am dead.

Replacing fuze tomorrow. 21" CRT Monitor may be salvaged by tomorrow evenin'! Wish me luck!

WORKING INSIDE YOUR MONITOR IS EXTREMELY HAZARDOUS!

as long as you know which parts are dangerous you should be fine but BE CAREFUL MAN!

Mmh, yeah.
I was hovering round my dad like a fly making sure he didnt touch anything hazzardous - but he's a qualified engineer and had a lot of tools, including things to check if anything is live or if there is anything sotred up in connections, he' generally pretty safe inside a monitor.. Mind you, it did take us to remvoe THREE panels before we found the cocking fuse..

One of my friends in college wouldnt get the processor to sit in its case properly so he stuck it down with blu-tac. The teacher was bewildered when he picked it back up.
